About this deal

A motif is a symbol or idea that appears repeatedly to help support what the poet is trying to communicate. In poetry, motifs are often things with which we already have a cultural relationship—bodies of water to represent purity, sunrises to represent new beginnings, storm clouds to represent dramatic change. Mother Teresa’s “Life Is” leaves us with wise words to live by. Filled with words of encouragement, the poem is the Nobel Peace laureate’s view on all that life is, and how it should be lived. The poem’s positive, inspiring tone promises to leave you in high spirits. For that sweet odour which doth in it live. 16. “Sonnet: To Tartar, a Terrier Beauty” by Thomas Lovell Beddoes

Seeing the range of word-level tools available to you as a writer can be both exciting and a little overwhelming. As you can see, the twenty-six unassuming little letters of the English language carry within them a world of possibility—the poet just needs to know how to make them dance. This neighbour asks the poem’s speaker why he ‘failed’, and the speaker answers that it was for Beauty. The neighbour says that he died for Truth, and that the two of them are ‘Brethren’: kindred spirits. Inspired by the scenes depicted on an ancient Greek urn, this is one of Keats’s best odes. However, original readers didn’t think so: in 1820 it was met with a lukewarm reception. The Birth of Venus(1485) by Sandro Botticelli; Sandro Botticelli, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons The nostalgic tone of “Life is a Privilege'' makes one feel blessed to have the opportunity to live. Wilcox artfully describes all of life’s blessings (from the sun’s rays to the chance to chase our dreams). Serving as a bitter-sweet reminder of how short life is, the poem encourages the reader to leave no room for regret, and live out their heart's desires. 25. "Lines on a Skull", by Ravi Shankar

Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? is a poem by William Shakespeare, and one of the most famous of all the poems that he ever produced. In the case of this particular poem about beauty, it is probably one of the best-known in the English language. The predominant focus is on more than beauty alone, but rather on the idea that the subject’s beauty is something that is far more perfect than even the most perfect of all summer days, and that beauty does ultimately fade. However, the purpose of the poem is to find a way to preserve this beauty so that it can remain long after the body has died. But there can be many other kinds of meter, depending on how many metrical feet (like an iamb) appear per line. For example, iambic tetrameter uses the same structure as iambic pentameter but with only eight syllables instead of ten. 14. Metonym Li, C.; Sprott, J.C.; Hu, W.; Xu, Y. Some poets are great at crafting dark, haunting poetry; others write poems full of soft sunshine that make you think of a languid summer morning in the grass.

These works capture the magic and wonder of beauty through the eyes of a child, celebrating the joy and innocence that comes with experiencing beauty for the first time. 1. The Snowflake Tree Enjambment, from a Middle French word meaning “to step over,” is a poetic device in which a thought or an idea in a poem carries over from one line to another without pause. For example, T. S, Eliot’s The Waste Land says, “April is the cruelest month, breeding / Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing / Memory and desire.” While beauty may fade from the real world, it will not fade from the eternal words that have been written, and so the speaker’s beloved will forever remain a stunningly beautiful and perfect creature in his eyes.
