About this deal

When it comes to autofocus, it’s very much a tale of two systems. For viewfinder shooting, the D7500 uses a 51-point phase-detection system, with the AF array providing decent coverage by SLR standards – about 75% of the frame width, and 50% of its height. As with still shooting, the wide range of sensitivities is available for recording in low- and bright-light conditions, ranging from expanded ISO 100-1,640,000, and sensitivity values are manually adjustable via the dedicated movie-shooting menu. Also, a video-optimized Flat Picture Control mode can be used during recording to flatten the overall contrast curve for more control during post-production and color grading. Take a look at our guide to the best Nikon DSLRs for more models, and also the best Nikon F-mount lenses to go with them. Nikon D7500 – Features Nikon uses a monocoque construction for the D5600 and D7500, which means their bodyshells are made from one piece of polycarbonate. That makes them lighter and stronger than they would otherwise be. Contemporary rivals include the Canon EOS 90D, which is more expensive but also more advanced, and various Pentax DSLRs including the new Pentax KF.

based movie image area provides a 1.3x crop of the DX sensor, and is used for recording Full HD and HD video.Below the viewfinder is the 3.2in 922k-dot LCD, which is an impressively slim unit that tilts up and down while adding little to the depth of the camera. To be honest, I’d have preferred a fully articulated design as seen on the D5600 or Canon EOS 90D, since tilt-only screens are useless when shooting in portrait format. However, the D7500 is more advanced, having a better AF system, 4K video, excellent low-light performance and a weatherproof construction that could prove useful for anyone interested in shooting landscape, sport and wildlife in less than ideal conditions. Spot White Balance control for live view shooting makes setting the white balance as easy as pointing to the area in the frame that should be white.

For those with a bigger budget, the mighty Nikon D850 is still on sale, too, so while DSLRs might be in decline, there’s still a good deal of choice. As on the D500, omitting the low-pass filter enabled Nikon to eke out that bit more detail from the 20.9MP sensor, and while it may seem quite a sacrifice to lose almost 4MP compared to the D7200's 24.2MP, the minor drop in resolution does have advantages, particularly when it comes to sensitivity. Nikon has included a flat Picture Control mode designed to allow easy colour grading of your footage in post-production, and a zebra pattern display to help you avoid clipping highlight detail. The fine detail rendition is good, but it did lag very slightly behind the results from the D7200. It’s likely that you’d only notice this in direct side-by-side comparisons, however, and the D7500’s sensor has many other qualities to commend it.

Interestingly, it's the Pentax KP that wins out here, with the Nikon D7500 and Fujifilm X-T30 in second place. It's worth drawing attention to the Pentax KP's overall performance in our lab tests. It's not a major brand any more and the lens support may be a bit patchy, but Pentax still makes some very good cameras. Verdict

Scene Recognition System and Exposure Metering

Shutter unit has been tested for up to 150,000 cycles for long-lasting use and an integrated shutter monitor automatically calculates the duration between front and rear curtain movements with each exposure to automatically correct for any variances. The D7500 is the clear winner here as it is capable of shooting 4K video whereas the D5600 is capped at Full HD. However, if you want to create a slow motion video, both cameras allow you to shoot Full-HD video at up to 60p which means you can have half-speed video. Both cameras are compatible with Nikon’s extensive range of F-mount lenses and offer features that give you room to grow as a photographer. However, if you can forgive the 3.3Mp lower resolution, the D7500 is a bit more ‘serious’ and will deliver great images in a wider range of situations. It’s a good pairing. The 18-140mm offers a sizeable zoom range over the average kit lens, yet it’s not too heavy and its optical performance is good– especially if you switch on thein-camera lens corrections. (which work only with JPEGs– rawfiles will still need correcting). The D7500 delivers crisp, high-definition images with rich tonal gradations. You’ll enjoy phenomenally accurate subject recognition and superior performance at high ISOs. You’ll marvel at the quality of its 4K/UHD video footage. And the in-camera Picture Control system makes it easy to apply your own creative style whether you’re shooting stills or video.
