Likewise, if you’re using diamond after diamond to build something for your future, but it’s not making you happy and seems like a long-term thing with no end in sight, that’s not great either. I was curious as to where this idea came from. On 5th December 2012 Craig Weller wrote about a very basic life calendar that he was using where he was filling in the ‘week’ boxes in what is a simple printed 52×80 grid. He calls it a ‘Memento Mori’ chart – it means ‘remember you will die’. Spanish brand 4K WEEKS has a creative way for you to chronicle your life. Their 4k Weeks Poster comprises tiny boxes in which each square corresponds to one week of life—enough to fill 88 years (the average lifespan of a human). The premise is simple: color the boxes based on the number of weeks you’ve lived. Through the weeks, and in turn years, you’ll see different designs emerge and fade away as new ones come into view. It all depends on your age and time of year. As you can see, schooling took up about 1000 weeks of my life. I’m privileged to have been able to study, but damn, that’s a lot of time… I recently made the toughest career decision I have ever had to make: leaving my role as General Manager of Brilliant Hire. Over the span of 3 weeks, I agonized over this decision to the point where I began losing sleep worried about how my team would react to the decision. More than just a team, they are friends, and I worried they would be angry/disappointed/etc of me. Or that the board of advisors would be angry with me.Ultimately, I believe being financially independent will redefine my relationship with work. Today, I, along with most of the corporate world, have a job to pay mortgage, put food on the table, etc, yet most of those same people also are unhappy with their job. I don’t want to be in this position and believe that working towards financial independence will provide that cushion to avoid this trap. Being outside recharges me The boxes can also be a reminder that life is forgiving. No matter what happens each week, you get a new fresh box to work with the next week. It makes me want to skip the New Year’s Resolutions—they never work anyway—and focus on making New Week’s Resolutions every Sunday night. Each blank box is an opportunity to crush the week—a good thing to remember.
