About this deal

A major question: will it be possible to simply install firmware updates that are accessible through the Russia Malahit online network, in these Chinese clones? Another question involves batteries, which do not appear to be easily replaceable on Chinese clones as they are on the Russia-made unit. Importantly that Georgi already released next generation of his radio DSP2 which he is selling now, with second board of automatic filters getting this radio to the next level. A valid product review is one where you have experience or knowledge of the product that you would like to share with others. These upgrades show again that the Malahit team is serious about improving the current DSP-2 model, though it’s clear development continues for new hardware that will likely be available in coming months.

I will be looking ahead to likely more significant hardware changes in the Malahit in coming months. On the Malahiteam Telegram group, some of these have already been leaked out, though with little further detail. My particular DSP-2 unit went dead after an update to an early version of the 2.10TEST firmware. At the time, I had spoken via Skype with Georgiy on the Malahit team and kept up a string of communications on the Malahit Telegram channel. Its a shame these radios are so so widely and for so much to non specialists, as they represent very poor value for money unless you have the skill and time to upgrade themDo not submit a product review critiquing another review or reviewer. Reviewers should be able to share their product opinion without being publicly criticized. For my personal interests, the combination of a Malahit, Afedri SDR, and Belka DX for now fill all of my needs for experimentation with these small standalone radios. It will certainly be interesting to see where things stand at about this same time in 2022. The results are clear – with all the bells and whistles that a Malahit offers in terms of signal processing – it is often much easier to get comfortably listenable audio from a portable made for shortwave listening than with the Malahit. From February you can also expect an optional additional board where reception on 6ghz is possible with additional filters. A 16 bit ADC will also be built into the Malahit DDC from February.

The major problem with the Malahit has been internally-generated noise. My first DSP-2 unit had numerous noise spikes, some appearing at inconvenient places in the middle of shortwave bands. One example was on or around 6 MHz where Radio Havana, Radio Mali and other stations are located. Main chip ARM STM32H743VIT6 MCU High-performance and DSP with DP-FPU, ARM Cortex-M7 MCU with 2MBytes Flash, 1MB RAM, 400 MHz CPU In recent tests, I have used the DSP-2 with an AirSpy You Loop, placed in an indoors location where I get the best reception in my house, at a height of about 8 feet. The comparison took into account the results from the DDC versions with two ADC versions - AD9649 and MDRA1A16FI.I have mainly been using it for monitoring HF Amateur bands. The Scope's maximum bandwidth is only 160 kHz, but for HF that is certainly adequate. The Scope works brilliantly, however for me the most impressive thing is its Noise Reduction. My appreciation goes to Georgiy who decided to send a new DSP-2 to me. This took about 3 weeks from the end of July until just recently when the receiver arrived (though the U.S. Postal Service made the end of that journey quite interesting). Note that lowest range has been decreased to 20 kHz, along with yet further efforts to make it possible to handle strong signals and overloading. Sensitivity and selectivity are surprisingly top drawer; I am hard pressed to find much difference between my IC-7300 receiver and the Malahit-DSP. Performance in the ham bands is excellent as is in the AM broadcast band. One could easily argue that the numerous signal processing and other flexibilities of the Malahit make that decision for you. While the Belka DX is superior in many respects, it lags behind the Malahit on sheer number of settings, though the Belka’s fixed processing positions are more than sufficient for superb reception on shortwave.
