About this deal

My biggest complaint is the diminutive size of the interiors, with some rooms only measuring a few studs in either direction. The designers get as creative as they can with such a small space, but it does all start to feel like a rehash of previous designs. I think this model looks a little disjointed, with the pink of the archway particularly out of place. As is often the case, some of my favourite details are the smaller models inside, such as the plants in the florists, the tiny sink upstairs, and the sun lounger on one of the roofs. The middle roof, although detailed on the front, is otherwise conspicuously bare. The third building is taller still, with three storeys, albeit one under the eaves of the roof. The ground floor is a vibrant pink and blue music shop, with excellent awnings above the floor-to-ceiling window and door, and a piano sign running up the storefront. Since Market Street is Factory, I wonder if we'll see more Cafe Corner style sets under the exclusives heading, modular building...

As many of you know, I am more of a Star Wars fan so my additional photos are filled with minifigs of that theme: Each floor is easily detached from the one above. Only the ground floor attaches to those beside it, meaning you can remove the other two floors even when the entire Main Street is connected. Maybe it seems that way in the review because they only reviewed the minifigures from the A-model — though I'd argue that being in a band is a kind of work in and of itself, and it also seems likely that even there, the two members of this girl group are also responsible for running the music and record stores!

Although I am sure I would have thought it to be a great set when it was released, I'm not so keen on it now, especially when comparing it with other modulars. When considered in isolation it's fine, but I don't think it's aged well, and it doesn't really match the architectural style or design of the café or subsequent buildings. Of course, it made sense at the time to make it compatible with the café, to help establish the standard and encourage builders to add their own designs to their street, but I think it's best left out of it now. Now, from an internal perspective my opinion is that it is just too small. Id like to add an interior but a majority of it is already consumed by the staircase which (unlike Caf Corner) starts exactly in the center of the room on each floor. Then the staircase traverses the room effectively cutting it in half. The Diner was my first Modular, and it's still my favorite in terms of aesthetic and build experience. Now we own five others, plus the Spring Lantern Festival, and we've built a couple compatible Modular MOCs. I look forward to getting the Boutique Hotel soon (and the Daily Bugle!!!).

An orange reception desk sits to one side of the door on the ground floor, with an arm chair and table beneath a large lamp on the other. Modular to me does not mean: small version. Modular can also mean inter-exchangeable. So modular building, using building as a verb. As Huw has shown in his great review (thanks!) the floors can be rearranged. I think this is the core meaning of building modular. Using units of same shape en sizes. The looks en feel of the main building is definitely original Amsterdam buildings. A couple of streets still to this day hold a daily market. As years passed some of the venders (marketeers?) replaced their temporary stands for permanent ones. Most of them live at the building behind, next or on top of the stand. Why rebuild every day if you can have a permanent stand? Also, I am enjoying both the "Modular/non-Modular" debate and everyone's opinions of what the "best" and "worst" Modulars are. I have no dog in that first fight, and I would be happy to display any of the series in our family's LEGO town, so I'm not invested in the second, either. Inside the shop is a turntable and two containers of records, with a number of 2x2 printed tiles featuring as the record sleeves. There's nothing on the walls.
