For better or worse, a lot of hobbyist film shooters want a certain vintage look. With its sunny feel and colours and contrast that enhance a scene without making it unrealistic, Portra seems to deliver exactly what they want. I think that generally, Portra is known for its muted, pastel colours (with perhaps a very slight yellow hue) and to be honest, Fuji Superia nearly replicates that with perhaps a little bit more saturation. I think Fuji Superia 400 could be a great option for projects that might not be completely important. Like, let’s say you want to shoot good portraits or documentary photography or street photography and you want it to be good but you don’t need it to be absolutely perfect, this is where I think Fuji Superia comes into play.

At the high end of the speed spectrum (and higher price point), Portra 800 is the final offering from Kodak’s Portra line. If you have a camera or photography shop near you that keeps a good selection of film, they should really have some Portra 400. The only reason they wouldn’t is that they’ve sold out. It comes in a 5-roll box but any shop worth their salt should let you buy single rolls from open boxes too. The only elephant in the room here is something we maybe should have touched on earlier. It’s not cheap. In fact, depending on where you shop, Portra 400 might be Kodak’s most expensive colour negative film. There’s not much to say about the image qualities Portra brings to your street photography that wasn’t covered in the last section. The cleanness, sharpness, contrast, and muted colours just work. Kodak Portra 400 is undeniably better but Fuji Superia is really good for what it is. What Are They Best For? It doesn’t matter if your photographs are posed ones with models or candid ones with strangers. Having natural skin tones on people is equally welcome. In the close-up pictures above, we can see that Superia does have more noticeable grain than Portra 400, but with that being said, I’d still say it’s pretty good.

As per usual, Portra 400 is probably better in this department because of its dynamic range and finer grain, it’s tones are probably a bit better. Dynamic Range Kodak Portra has been around since 1998, although, I’m sure a variation of it has been available for a lot longer (Kodak loved to chop and change the name of things). The low speed of Portra 160 unfortunately means it doesn’t perform well in low light. However, with external flashes or other lighting accessories, you can achieve that low-light performance with the added bonus of the 160’s fine grain and sharpness! Portra 160 comes in 35mm, 120 (medium format) and large format (4×5”). When you’re shooting your Portra 400, be aware that it’s one of the most forgiving films out there as far as exposure latitude goes. It’s supposed to deliver usable results at two stops over or two stops under, which means shooting anywhere between ISO 100 to 1600 without pulling or pushing. But I will say the image qualities engineered into Portra 400 with portraits in mind translate very well to the street.
