About this deal

While the BBC world service and plenty of other pro teams use GoPros, they’re only just broadcast quality; technically the Insta360 isn’t really, but it’s still very, very good. Some other new modes that are exclusive to the One X2 are a few photography-focused ones, including PureShot (which apparently automatically adds extra dynamic range from DNG raw data) and InstaPano (a one-tap panorama with no need to sweep across the scene). When shooting 360 footage at 5.7K, there are options for 30fps, 25fps and 24fps, giving a good spread for standard filming (I prefer 25fps as it makes for a simple to work with timeline).

This also reflects a broader issue that's worth noting – you'll need a fairly recent phone or tablet to make the most of the Insta360 One X2's app. For iPhones, you need a model with the A11 chip or above (effectively anything from the iPhone 8/8 Plus onwards), while on Android you'll ideally need a phone that has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, Exynos 9810 or Kirin 980 chip or above (think Samsung Galaxy S9 or Huawei Mate 20 and up). It’s a touchscreen, of course, and it’s a cinch to swipe between all the main modes and find other options by swiping up and down. The Insta360 app really impressed us. It’s super-stable and reliable, attaching a phone to the Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition without problems and sharing files faster than the first-gen model. It certainly feels like trading files over WiFi is faster than on the previous version, though some of its headline features – such as 6K widescreen mode and 48MP PureShot photos – can’t be used with the app; you’ll need to use the (free) Insta360 Studio software on a desktop computer for those. Performance If you’re clumsy, or simply can’t be bothered to look after your kit, don’t buy a 360 camera. However, I’ve used this at high speed on a variety of bikes in very hurried shooting conditions and I’ve had no issues. Use the silicone cover (making sure it’s clean), and be careful, and you’ll have access to one of the most incredible pieces of camera kit I’ve ever used. I’m very impressed with the audio from the One X2. Wind noise at a standstill is well controlled and allows decent speech, while in shelter it’s very good. I’d say my GoPro Hero 7 has the slight edge in speech quality as it sounds a little less processed, but I’ve no problem with the One X2.

Capturing great footage on a motorbike can be tough; where do you put the camera for the best angle? Do you film the road ahead or you the rider? What happens if your mates are riding next to you, and you want to capture them?

Is the Insta360 ONE RS a novelty or a serious filmmaking device? Unique in the market, the ONE RS is designed to appeal to anyone who would normally consider a GoPro yet yearns to at least have a go at 360º.Compatible with iOS mobile devices with chips A11 or above and iOS version 10.0 or above , including iPhone SE 2, iPhone 8, iPhone 8P, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 mini, iPad Air(2020), iPad Pro and newer iPad models. Mounting is incredibly easy as the camera pretty much captures everything, so you’ll find it very versatile. So far, though, we'd say it looks similar to the One X in terms of quality, which is to be expected given that it appears to have an identical image sensor that shoots 5.7K video and 18Mp stills with a maximum bit-rate of 100Mbps. With a full 1hr 28mins of filming time, the Insta360 One R has plenty of battery life for me to get an entire day filming everything I need for a road test. The One R gave me 58 minutes with the standard battery, which was fine for me, but this is an impressive boost.

While I’d consider all the other accessories to be vital, many users will be able to make use of their existing Go-Pro compatible mounts, buying any odd bits extra they need.It opens up some incredible possibilities and lets you convincingly mimic a drone. Try it next time you’re capturing a crowd or filming a car commercial on a budget. The 360º records everything in 5.5K 30fps, so here it’s mostly about the post-processing and templates, of which there are a few new ones; ‘CineLapse’– a transition-heavy hyperlapse — and the trippy ‘Horizon Levelling’ join dozens more.
