About this deal

It's not necessarily easy to view 'Tea or Coffin', but the TV preservation experts at Kaleidoscope recently put on an event which - amongst a whole treasure trove of rarely seen delights - included this snapshot of Hugh and I Spy. As you might have guessed - otherwise this article would be highly devoid of detail - I attended this event and lapped up the comedy stylings of Terry and Hugh. As such, a group of avid film collectors, together experts from CATHI are staging Film is Fabulous! – a film event at Leicester’s Phoenix Cinema, on Sunday 29 October 2023. Aunt Maude, a long lost relative of Terry of whom he's never heard of before, travels from her home in Australia to pay him and Mrs Scott a visit, and it is discovered that she is quite wealthy. We found them in the collections of people who have sadly passed away and recovered them before they were lost again in house clearances." Ahead of this, they have announced the discovery of three classic BBC TV programmes from the 1960s. All three are currently missing from the BBC Archive:

HC: Really? Well that's great because I was in Italy with some friends and they were playing this fantastic tape and when I asked who it was they said it was Everything But The Girl. So I'm a fan of theirs. The three finds will be returned to the BBC Archive for scanning shortly. They are part of a series of discoveries made by Film is Fabulous! in recent months. More classic British television finds will be announced in the coming days.

Key cast & crew credits

Where the series really shows its age is in the dubious usage of race, the first episode of the series, for example which centres around the activities of Chinese thugs is entitled 'Yellow Peril' and 'Tea or Coffin' finds Fred Emney painting his skin to appear Indian which, even if it is for the purposes of espionage, would be a hard sell for modern television commissioners. However, where Hugh and I does excel is in its extensive use of Asian actors as it was an age in which jobbing Asian actors found screen time difficult to come by as Kristopher Kum - who appeared in the episode 'Five in a Bed' - described at the time: Organisers of this weekend's Film is Fabulous! convention, working in conjunction with specialist researchers and Leicester's De Montfort University's Cinema and Television History Institute, found film prints amongst the archives of recently deceased film collectors.

Hugely popular long-running comedy series starring former stage partners Hugh Lloyd and Terry Scott as a type of modern day Laurel and Hardy double-act, forever finding themselves in hot water and situations that tested their friendship to the limits. HC: Yes. Mostly because I want to take it off. Don't you think the Stranglers early material sounded very odd? They compressed the sound so much it sounded like it was coming out of a telephone. If ever I listen to it now I have to twiddle the eq on my machine until it sounds warm again. The collectors, together with academics from DMU’s Cinema and Television History Institute (CATHI), are holding ‘Film is Fabulous!’ at the Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre in Leicester at the end of the month.

[11] Subsequently it transmitted after 'Coal Comfort' which was originally scheduled to be shown following this episode.
