4. TTL and HSS (The Bells and Whistles)
The reason we’ve amalgamated maximum power with recycle time is that there is a direct correlation between the two. If you are shooting at ¼ power on a 200 W*s strobe, you would only need to shoot at ⅛ power on a 400 W*s strobe. Using less of your available maximum power decreases recycle times, so keep that in mind. If recycle times are important to you, it’s nice to have something a bit more powerful. 3. Minimum Power and Power Range At flash power settings up to and including 1/4 maximum power, recycle speeds proved virtually instantaneous in our tests, official specifications rating them at around 1/100th of a second. Recycling is still fast at 1/2 and full-power settings, recorded at 0.5 and 1.5 seconds respectively. The VL300II can output a lot of power, whilst maintaining a lightweight and compact body. They feature a separate control panel, which not only makes the light itself smaller and lighter. It also enables you to easily control the light without a remote, even when the light is mounted high up. TTL really comes into its own in sports and event photography where you will have no control over how close your subjects are to your strobe. A dancer moving from one side of the floor to the other isn’t going to pause what they are doing so you can run over with a light meter! In dynamic shooting settings like these, TTL is a lifesaver. Pet photography, kids running around, wedding receptions, and similar situations can all benefit from TTL.
