About this deal

Highland Distillers bought the company in 1892. In 1960 it was rebuilt and upgraded to double the production capacity and to yield lighter spirit. However, during the economic downturn of 1986, this small remote distillery stopped production. But there was a light at the end of the still. Matured in Sherry, Bourbon and Port casks, the single malt carries notes of maritime, tropical fruit, Sherried dark soy, liquorice and sea kelp on the nose, alongside flavours of dark chocolate, fermented soy and charred mango, with treacle and sea salt. In 2009 the company also introduced two new innovative products which are produced using the same process as that used for making single malt scotch whisky but without the ageing process. "The Spirit Drink that dare not speak its name" is the result of 1 mash of malted barley, fermented and distilled twice. The product is bottled without ageing at 50% abv. From that point on, Glenglassaugh ran into problems. The distillery was mothballed during an industry-wide slump at the start of the 20th century and remained silent for many years, slowly but surely slipping into a state of disrepair.

Retasted April 2018... Bright gold. A teasing bouquet that rewards patience; gradually developing with sponge cake, vanilla, cream biscuits and fresh oak…deliciously crisp delivery, evoking caramelised fruits and cream tea biscuits, balanced by suggestions of lemon tart and straw at the finish. Beautiful purity and poise. Massively improved over its first incarnation. 46% Alc./Vol. With water: When water is added, the palate opens up to reveal more fruit flavours, including apple and citrus notes. The smoky taste is still prominent, but a hint of vanilla begins to emerge. Finish: Blenders however found it a difficult customer, one of those highly individual malts which didn’t rub along particularly well with other elements in a blend. Had the single malt market been up and running in the 1970s its story might be very different, but its sheer awkwardness meant it was deemed surplus to Highland’s requirements when the whisky loch was filling in the early 1980s and firms were rationalising their estates. A new challenger

A late-Victorian distillery, Glenglassaugh was built in 1874 by local businessman James Moir and 18 years later became part of Highland Distillers. It didn’t have a huge amount of time to prove itself as a downturn in the market saw it close in 1907 and not re-open until 1960, when once again the market was showing a sharp increase. While the Glenglassaugh Evolution whisky is an improvement over the Revival expression, it falls a little short in terms of complexity. However, it’s worth noting that the whisky is relatively young, which may account for this. With water: the taste profile shifts to reveal a touch of sweeter citrus notes, coupled with the taste of peppery strawberry soup. Finish: Nose: Sweet caramel and toffee with notes of nutty Sherry, milk chocolate and honey. Ripe plums, red berries and oranges. Caramelised sugar and earthy, charred oak.Revival has been matured in a mix of ex-red wine and fresh ex-bourbon casks and then finished for 6 months in ex-Oloroso sherry butts. It is a NAS release. It is not chill-filtered with no added colour. Neat: Spicy entrance on the palate, with a subtle woodiness that enhances the velvety mouthfeel. While the pineapple note is less prominent than on the nose, it’s still a pleasant citrusy presence. The taste evolves to salted caramel and a generous amount of pepper, followed by subtle hints of vanilla and honey. There’s also a slight tartness of grapefruit and green apple, indicating a touch of youthful character. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. This Glenglassaugh Revival presents a notable wine influence on the palate, albeit with a discernible bourbon influence. Whilst the sherry finish is present, it doesn’t assert itself as strongly as anticipated. It gives the impression of being a younger spirit, and the addition of water brings a more balanced taste. At a price point of €40, it is worth considering. However, at a higher range of €50 to €60, it may not be the best value for money.
