About this deal

Falloff of illumination towards the edges of the frame is well controlled for a wide aperture lens, with the corners only being 0.989 stops darker than the image centre at f/1.4. Visually uniform illumination is achieved with the lens stopped down to f/4 or beyond. The Fujifilm XF 33mm F1.4 R LM WR doesn't exhibit any barrel distortion, as you can see in the photo below. Sunstars and Flare The XF 35mm f1.4 is a lens that you just have to use. You can’t look at charts, you can’t look at specs, you have to just use it, then you’ll understand.

If you have an X-Pro1, you need one. It's much better than any of the LEICA 35mm and 50mm SUMMILUX-M ASPH lenses for use on the Fuji. The new Fuji 33mm is quite a lot heavier and bigger than the lens that it most resembles, the old XF 35mm F1.4 from 2013, which weighs 187g and measures 55mm in length, making the XF 33mm double the weight and 50% longer. As I reveal below, the sharpness of the Fuji XF 35mm f/1.4 lens is excellent. Since all high-end Fuji mirrorless cameras utilize the X-Trans sensor that has no anti-aliasing filter, you get the maximum performance out of all lenses attached to the Fuji X mount. Compared to many other prime lenses that often need to be stopped down to yield sharp images, the lens is pretty sharp right at f/1.4, so you can use it wide open for your photography needs and only stop down to increase the depth of field. The Fujifilm XF 33mm F1.4 R LM WR is a fast standard prime lens for Fujifilm's X-series range of APS-C format mirrorless cameras. Since this lens is part of the original 3, which were a bit all over the place when it comes to build quality and consistency, the tolerances are not up to par with more recent releases. Aperture Ring Fuji clearly applies some funky optical corrections to its JPEG images. While it certainly helps push sharpness in the center all apertures, it strangely results in decreased mid-frame and corner performance between f/1.4 and f/2.0. In addition, Adobe software automatically applies optical corrections to Fuji’s RAW files, making it impossible to see what corrections do to images. Since I measure MTF performance using Imatest and DCRaw, the below results reflect lens performance without any corrections, so you can see what the real optical capabilities of a lens are. X-E1 + XF35mmF1.4 R @ 35mm, ISO 200, 1/250, f/5.6 The Fujifilm XF 33mm F1.4 R LM WR lens has an internal focusing (IF) system that uses a linear motor, which results in fast, accurate, and virtually silent auto-focusing on the X-T30 II camera that we tested it with.

While it might be an older lens, and technically not weather resistant, this lens is as solid as it get. It’s metal and comes with a metal hood as well. Frankly my version of this lens has gotten banged up over the years, exposed to tons of elements, and still works perfectly. I'd pitch the Fuji cap and get a new Nikon "pinch" type cap. I'm not kidding: these fatter Nikon caps are much easier to use.

Where to buy this lens

It’s not the best lens in the world technically, but it just has so much character and produces a truly unique look that will leave you completely addicted. The Fuji 35mm f1.4 is a lens I’ve had for some time now and but really got around to reviewing. I did a comparison between the Fujinon 35mm f1.4 and the 35mm f2, but now since the XC 35mm f2 is on the market, I think a full review is worth the time to showcase the uniqueness of this lens because a lot of people don’t fully understand what this lens or they are afraid of the older autofocus system. I say that because a lot of people say if you shoot stopped down you can just get the f2, but even then they still have different rendering. It’s not just about sharpness. ISO 200, f1.4, 1/280 The latter is a good option if you are just getting started in photography, though I think starting with the 35mm f1.4 like I did is perfectly good too if you’ve got the budget. Verdict: When is the Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 a good fit for you?
