About this deal

As a variation on a theme, try a turnover. Make as for the Angelic Apple Pie above, but use Filo pastry instead of shortcrust and split it so that only three very, very thin sheets are used for each side of the Diablo. Cherry pie filling makes a great turnover treat. Now I just need the weather to be kind for my beach BBQ! This beach BBQ is one where you have to bring your own kit with you – so I plan to take my Diablo and a small camping stove – job done! I might have a go at cooking a full burger in it …. see how I feel on the day!

It was four years ago I bought a Diablo toastie maker – and today I’ve got to dig it out again as there’s a Beach BBQ potentially on the cards (weather permitting, as they say!). These are “as seen at the Ideal Home Show” in London too last year, if you were there!Note: There’s no need to flip your sandwich over if you’re using a toastie maker. Each plate is hot, meaning that the sandwich gets heated from both sides equally. If using meat, ALWAYS use cooked meats, don’t try to cook raw meats in the Diablo, the cooking time isn’t long enough. These toastie makers are perfect for one person, so if there are two of you (or more), you might like to consider getting one each – and enjoy all the fun of the Who Makes the Best Toastie Contest! A crispy pie-like sandwich, with sealed edges, slipped out of the Diablo easily, leaving only a tiny amount behind and no mess on the hob. You can unclip the two parts of the Diablo for easier cleaning – either by hand or in the dishwasher. If you’re using vegetables, then use pre-cooked ones. They won’t cook from raw in the 4-5 minutes in a toastie.

When I first opened the box, I thought, ‘blimey, that’s small’ and it is small but, as you can see in the photos, it holds a lot of filling. I had planned to make a baked bean and cheese toastie using normal bread but there was none in the freezer, so I used a tortilla wrap instead. I placed the tortilla wrap on one of the Diablo plates (after heating it up first for a couple of minutes), piled my filling on top, then folded the wrap over to make an envelope. I clipped the handle of the Diablo, trimmed off the edges of the wrap and heated it on the hob for a few minutes, turning it over frequently. Because I’m a der-brain, I scorched the chopping board by placing the hot Diablo on it after pre-heating it. Which isn’t a big deal to me but if you like to keep your chopping board pristine and un-branded, you should probably put the hot Diablo on a trivet or something. Heap the pie filling onto one side of the Diablo. You can used pre-prepared, canned pie filling or create a great home-made taste with stewed apples, brown sugar, sultanas and cinnamon. Either way, be sure to fill the Diablo.Ah, the most iconic of all toasties: the simple cheese and beans. The beauty of this toastie is that you don’t even have to heat up your beans beforehand. Grate or slice your cheddar and place it onto your slice of bread. Then simply open a can of your favourite variety (it has to be Heinz, right?), spoon a tablespoon of beans on top of the cheese and you’re ready to go. Cheese and ham Push down the lid and let your toastie maker get to work. The average toastie takes 3-5 minutes, but this is usually to ensure the cheese has fully melted. If you’re using a vegan recipe, 3 minutes should be enough. The Diablo is really robust and built to last a lifetime. The two halves can also be separated instantly, because of the unique hinge which means you open it out fully and the hinge enables separation of the two halves – making two miniature frying pans, ideal for campfire eggs! This design also means it’s even easier to clean and keep it clean. To find the best models on the market, we got our MasterChef on and cooked up batch after batch of ham, cheese and tomato toasties. We timed how long each machine took to heat up and cook, then measured the temperature of each toastie to see if it remained consistent. These can be made in advance and reheated on party night or alternatively kept warm in the oven while you make a batch. Serve with sprigs of onion or salami

If you’re at home in your kitchen, using your hob, make sure you use a heatproof trivet to lay down the hot Diablo on, so you don’t burn your worktop or chopping board! I use my silicone iron mat 🙂 Before adding any other ingredients, the secret to a crispy golden brown toastie is how you prepare your bread. For those of you who love fish, a tuna melt is a wonderful filling lunchtime option. We tend to use ¾ of a can of tuna for this recipe, but if you’re sharing a can between you and a friend, you could go for half and top up with extra cheese. Not exactly a hardship… Beat the egg milk and flour together and pass though a strainer so it’s deliciously smooth. Dip the bread into the egg batter ensuring you coat it thoroughly. Place one piece of bread inside the Diablo maker, spoon the jam on top and then add the other slice of eggy bread. Cook for a minute and a half each side on a high heat. Sprinkle with caster sugar to serve and don’t eat any more sugar for another Now for the next part, generously butter two slices of bread with Barber’s Farmhouse butter place In your toastie maker, butter side out – we used a diablo toastie maker which can be found online at a very reasonable cost.Place one slice of bread (buttered side down) onto the base of the Diablo Sandwich Toaster (watch those hands on If you’re at the Ideal Home Show at any time, you might spot them, although (sshhh) you can buy them online much cheaper. Camping shops and caravan and camping shows will probably have these for sale. Otherwise, there’s always the cheats method – buy online!:
