a b c d e f Iriarte, J. A.; Franklin, W. L.; Johnson, W. E.; Redford, K. H. (1990). "Biogeographic variation of food habits and body size of the America puma". Oecologia. 85 (2): 185–190. Bibcode: 1990Oecol..85..185I. doi: 10.1007/BF00319400. PMID 28312554. S2CID 10134066. From 1987 to 1996, the first cougar ecology study was conducted in Yellowstone National Park. The research documented population dynamics of cougars in the northern Yellowstone ecosystem inside and outside the park boundary, determined home ranges and habitat requirements, and assessed the role of cougars as a predator. Of the 88 cougars that were captured, 80 were radio-collared. The word cougar is borrowed from the Portuguese çuçuarana, via French; it was originally derived from the Tupi language. A current form in Brazil is suçuarana. [3] In the 17th century, Georg Marcgrave named it cuguacu ara. Marcgrave's rendering was reproduced in 1648 by his associate Willem Piso. Cuguacu ara was then adopted by John Ray in 1693. [4] In 1774, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon converted cuguacu ara to cuguar, which was later modified to "cougar" in English. [5] [6]

Approximately 99% of young males disperse 50 to 400 miles; about 70–80% of young females disperse 20 to 150 miles. The remaining proportion of males and females establish living areas near where they were born. Therefore, most resident adult males in Yellowstone are immigrants from other areas, thus maintaining genetic variability across a wide geographic area.On those islands that were too small to sustain predators (i.e., cougars, jaguars and Harpy eagles), herbivore populations increased dramatically and overran the islands, leading to the reproductive failure of vegetation and a rapid decline in overall biodiversity. Within seven years, 75% of the remaining vertebrate species had disappeared. Terborgh and his colleagues concluded that “the presence of a viable carnivore guild is fundamental to maintaining biodiversity”. P. c. puma ( Molina, 1782) includes the synonyms araucanus, concolor, patagonica, pearsoni, and puma ( Trouessart, 1904)

Cougars hunt from dusk to dawn; however, they will also hunt during the day. Is a Mountain Lion a Carnivore? A Canada lynx( Lynx canadensis) sits primly on the shore of Loon Lake in Ontario, Canada in 1906. These 11- to 37-pound (5 to 17 kilogram) cats live in boreal forests across Canada and down into the northern United States. Photograph by George Shiras, Naitonal Geographic CreativeLinnaeus, C. Cougars are magnificent animals, and although they aren’t currently on the endangered list, there are things we can do to prevent it from ever happening, with the most important being petitioning to have the cougar taken off hunting lists and placed on the list of protected species. a b "Cougar".
