In 1902, Ransome abandoned a chemistry degree to become a publisher's office boy in London. He used this precarious existence to practice writing, producing several minor works before Bohemia in London (1907), a study of London's artistic scene and his first significant book. Literary scholar Peter Hunt said he believes the series "... changed British literature, affected a whole generation's view of holidays, helped to create the national image of the English Lake District and added Arthur Ransome's name to the select list of classic British children's authors".

The main pool is child-friendly but unsupervised. Floaties are available to borrow and there’s a Slip N Slide at the side. Meals The four traditional stone cottages (sleeping 2-11) are set slightly further inland, closer to the Clubhouse and the main pool. They’re rustic on the outside; stylish and beautiful on the inside, with calming blue and green colour schemes to match the natural surroundings. Lawns is the largest of the lot and can be booked with the little cottage next door, to sleep 11 in total. Our favourite, Fynbos, has a great view and it's the smallest so ideal for a couple. All of the stone cottages have fire pits outside, so you can be among nature late into the evening. Note: Milkwood cottage and Garden cottage are surrounded by milkwood trees so they don't have the lagoon view and are a bit darker inside. Features include: All inventory must remain in the property it was in at arrival and not be taken to another property. With some exceptions, the exact ages of the characters are not stated. In the first book they run from Roger at seven to about 12 to 14 (John and Nancy). All characters age as the series goes on; the final book occurs three to four years after the first. (See timeline below.) There is an inconsistency in the only two dates mentioned in the series. In the first the year is stated to be 1929, while the second book, Swallowdale, supposed to take place a year later, gives the year as 1931. After a short 3 minute walk from your private parking space, you enter the light and airy space of the houseboat, with windows flanking all sides. Access is via a ramp, and depending on the tide, you either have to walk up or down to get on board.
