About this deal

Condition matters! You can assume the coin prices we have researched are for coins in general circulation but are otherwise in reasonable condition.

In 2022, over 29 million 50p coins were released into circulation, including three new 50 pence designs celebrating Pride, Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and a Queen Elizabeth Memorial 50p commemorating her reign. A new monarch means a new obverse for our coins, and a new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, will feature on future 50 pence coins alongside a special coronation 50p featuring a crowned version of His Majesty’s effigy in honour of such an occasion. As this was an ordinary circulating coin, it might have sneaked out into circulation and people would actively look through their change prior to decimalisation in the hope of finding one. Most fifty pence coins were released either circulated, uncirculated (BUNC), Silver Proof, or Gold Proof.

How much is my 50p worth?

The exact number of these errors is unknown but they were only made for the commemorative sets, so it is normal to see them in auctions in these sets and uncirculated quality. Although it cannot be ruled out that some of these valuable errors could appear in the change of our day-to-day lives, they would of course not have the same value as the coins in the uncirculated set. Brilliant Uncirculated (BU/BUNC), Proof, Piedfort, Silver, and Gold coins will obviously sell for much more. This UK coin is made of 0.9167 gold, its weight is 15.976 grams and diameter is 28.4 mm. In the normal print run, its coinage has a concave side. BUNC) = Brilliant Uncirculated, these coins never entered UK circulation. Which fifty pence coin is worth money? Note: One such valuable coin is the 50p Kew Gardens 2009, already mentioned in our rarest 50p coins post. Numbering only 210,000 units, you can find them in circulation today. We just need to make sure that the coin is the 2009 edition and not the much less valuable 2019 edition. List of Rarest coins in the U.K.

Another very rare 50p coin is the London 2012 Watersports Games 50p coin variant, showing a swimmer underwater. We spoke to Matt Curtis, The Royal Mint’s Historics and Collector Services Expert, about some of the rare coins that have been minted over the years. Here are some of Matt’s favourites:To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Bank of England in 1994, the Royal Mint decided to issue, among others, this two-pound gold coin. These Not Intended For Circulation (NIFC) coins are not in UK coin circulation are have been released as collectible coins only.

In 1982, the legend was replaced by “ TWO PENCE”– as there was no longer any point in keeping the word “New” on a coin that had been minted for 11 years. However, in 1983 a small number of coins were mistakenly minted with the old inscription “NEW PENCE”. According to various sources, between 50,000 and 250,000 of the 136 million pieces minted appear without the date on the front. The explanation for this is that the previous obverse of the 20p coin depicting “The Tudor Rose” was used by mistake. The date (2008) was shown on the reverse, so the coin was not dated. Various sources estimate the quantities minted at 10 – 12 units. Edward VIII abdicated on December 10, 1936, and this edition was finally discarded by his successor (his brother Albert who chose the name of George VI) and opted for the more common type, the one with the date below. Position The Vigo Five-Guinea coin was one of only a handful made from gold bullion captured by the British fleet at the Battle of Vigo Bay in northern Spain on 23 October 1702.We have not bought or sold, seen, or inspected any coins in our research to establish these guide prices. This currency, which in the first months of circulation was neither demanded nor sought after in the market despite its very low circulation, has become one of the most valuable this year (2020) after the official abandonment of the European Union by the United Kingdom on 31 January 2020. On the obverse side there is a bust of the monarch on the left with the legend EDWARDVS VIII D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP and on the reverse side the money plant with three flowers in the centre and legend 19 – THREE – 37 – PENCE.

With all the hype and UK newspaper press coverage around rare 50p coins and other collectible British coins, we put together a valuable 50p coins list to help you see current 50p coin values and mintage figures (how rare each coin is). Below shows the mintage figures for the calendar year of 2022, providing the only official guide to the rarest coins in circulation. There are different reasons for coins not entering circulation, such as too many coin denominations already in circulation. This slight discrepancy is found on the front side because of a stamping error, there were units (out of 1000) in which the portrait of the queen is larger than usual, leaving no room for the value “TWO POUNDS”. The stamp used for the coin was that of the two sovereigns.
