About this deal

The first thing to note is the weight of this trimmer. At 2.5 kg, it’s one of the lightest on my list, and you can certainly tell. Despite this, it still boasts a decent blade that’s capable of cutting through branches up to 20 mm in diameter. There’s no telescopic function, but the blade is 58 cm, so you’ve still got a decent reach. It’s cordless and hence becomes even more convenient to use. But yes, you would like to keep some spare batteries if you are working far away from a charging point. Even after being a cordless machine, it never compromises with power and gives you perfect result every time. What would really improve this trimmer though is an effective front handle. I found it difficult to hold the trimmer at an angle for more than a few minutes at a time, which became quite annoying. I believe this tool has a higher potential than is possible in its current design. If Bosch added a chunky “D” handle on the front section, it would be a much more formidable machine.

It has a built in clutch that acts as a safety stop to restrict the blade from moving when folding the blade for storage even if the throttle is accidentally touched. You feel safe and secure using this tool. The Bosch Cordless Hedge Trimmer AHS 50-20 LI has an impressive 40 minute battery life and is, like most Bosch products, designed with ease of use and manageability in mind.

Using a cordless pole hedge trimmer, with blade above head height is no joke. A full head protective unit, gloves, long sleeve shirt, and jeans with solid boots isn’t going over the top. Read the manufactures requirements and follow them please, it’s really not too much to protect yourself. Any time you are reaching or leaning, you exponentially increase the chance of an accident. That’s why I feel the Makita with so many angles is such a good bet. It helps keep you balance. Here’s a look at a guy operating a Makita safely. Not just image credit to Makita, thanks for a perfect example of how to use a dangerous tool overhead safely. The Bosch PowerForAll Tool range is a range of tools you can buy knowing that batteries are compatible with all tools in the range providing they are of the same voltage. eg 18v fits 18v, 12v (10.8v) fits 12v (10.8v) etc. Please also note that 10.8v is compatible with 12v & vice versa as it is just a name change. Indego Lawnmowers also use the PowerForAll 18v battery but require a cover plate to be removed if changing. They have the advantage of being relatively light weight, although this can vary somewhat between models. Some battery-powered pole trimmers weigh as little as 3 kg, whilst other can weigh over 5 kg.

If you have a range of Bosch tools then you will know all about their batteries. This battery fits 100+ other Bosch machines , from hedge trimmers and chainsaws to combi drills and jig saws, in fact any other 18V tool that they make. For large hedges, you’ll want an electric hedge trimmer with a blade length of 45 cm+. Some models will come with 70 cm blades, which can be worth considering. The trimmer comes with a powerful 18v battery that delivers enough get up and go for most average gardening needs. While it may not be sufficient for larger branches, this is unlikely something that would be needed in a domestic situation. The shaft is unfortunately not telescopic or adjustable but it does give you some good reach at 220cm long. The cutting head swivels so you can use it to cut across the top of your hedges and the blades cut branches cleanly. This works well from ground given less manoeuvrability. Trying to make all the long stems and high hedges accessible, Flymo equips the tool with a maximum expandable length of 3 metres. So, you will never have to look for a ladder or any other devices when you have the SabreCut. A hedge trimmer can be powered by either petrol or batteries (in the case of a cordless hedge trimmer). There are pros and cons to each, and then there are mains-powered trimmers as well, which have their own benefits and disadvantages. While it’s in action, it’s not a particularly noisy machine – I would say that it’s one of the quietest hedge trimmers that I have ever used. It also boasts some great safety features – even someone who was hedge trimming for the first time would be able to safely and confidently use it.

Our next recommendation from Terratek has a powerful 550W motor and a 10-meter power cable. However, the most interesting feature is a telescopic pole that you can extend up to 2.7 meters. Thankfully, that extra power doesn’t translate to more noise. You should still wear ear defenders for your own safety, but, at 96dB, this tool won’t bother your neighbours too much!

Its telescoping handle extends up to 102 inches (2.6 meters) so that you can trim all the bushes and high hedges without using a ladder. So whether you are a professional or home user, you can try this Bosch tool that’s perfect for both small and big gardens. There’s no question in my mind. If you buy any of the products reviewed here you’ll be at least satisfied. If you buy the Makita, you’ll be blown away, if you buy the Bosch, well, you expect that level of performance from a household name. All of these will make life that much easier. But before you do buy, here’s some key points to consider. Handheld shears can be used to prune ornamental bushes, but they are not large enough for full hedge trimming. Charging time can vary, and this is something to be aware of, especially if you don’t have the option of charging a spare battery whilst using the trimmer. This is something which is worth looking out for, and a model with 4 – 5 different angle positions will normally be enough to facilitate the majority of jobs.

Safety: Weight is an important factor of safety, as tools that are too heavy can cause injuries or be unsuitable for less able-bodied people. Trimmers that weighed less than 3.5 kg were given higher marks, and those that accounted for additional weight with a shoulder strap were rated higher. In all mains-powered models, safety was also a top priority, as the power cord can pose a safety risk. However, models with a 10 m cable are sufficiently safe, so these were given better marks. The pole saw was just as impressive. In fact, it functioned even better than some of the dedicated pole saws that I recently reviewed. This is largely due to its high-quality chain – it has an amazing grip that enables it to slice through both hardwood and softwood with ease.If the batteries are interchangeable, you can buy a trimmer of the same make, and extend the running time of your trimmer by transferring the batteries between compatible products. Charging the Battery It produces a clean, smart cut every time which makes it ideal for topiary. You can then switch to the grass shear function to neaten up any bits that you’ve missed with your mower.
