Once they were cut to length, I set all four uprights side by side with tops even so I could mark and precut opposing lap joints for stretchers that connect posts and rails, and mark attachment points for seat and table frames on lower inner margins of the posts. Then I beveled the tops of the posts and cut dish shapes into the bottom ends of the 10 foot long top rails so they’d fit down over the post tops and help repel water. The primary tool used to do this rough milling is a rotary chain saw “Lancelot” on a 4 and a half inch angle grinder. What does silver birch look like?
Use this joint to inset a smallish rung or ornamental stretcher into a larger-diameter log. (It’s better than trying to fasten two natural, round rustic logs, with their curved surfaces abutting round-to-round, making a weak joint that is fine for pure ornamentation, but that begs for the joiner to roll off its fastener if grasped or even if stressed by a heavy vine.) Work the smaller piece of wood first and trace its final shape onto the larger, which offers more latitude for adjustment and error.
