Shortly after departing, Beethoven learned that his father had died. [32] [33] Over the next few years, he responded to the widespread feeling that he was a successor to the recently deceased Mozart by studying Mozart's work and writing works with a distinctly Mozartian flavour. Despite this failure, Beethoven continued to attract recognition. In 1807 the musician and publisher Muzio Clementi secured the rights to publish his works in England, and Haydn's former patron Prince Esterházy commissioned the Mass in C, Op. 86, for his wife's name-day. But he could not count on such recognition alone. A colossal benefit concert he organized in December 1808, widely advertised, included the premieres of the Fifth and Sixth ( Pastoral) symphonies, the Fourth Piano Concerto, extracts from the Mass in C, the scena and aria Ah! perfido Op. 65 and the Choral Fantasy op. 80. There was a large audience (including Czerny and the young Ignaz Moscheles), but it was under-rehearsed, involved many stops and starts, and during the Fantasia Beethoven was noted shouting at the musicians "badly played, wrong, again!" The financial outcome is unknown. [79] De componist Ludwig von Beethoven"[The composer Ludwig van Beethoven]. arthub.vlaamsekunstcollectie.be (in Dutch). Flanders State of the Art. After painting 36 portraits of Beethoven, in around 1952 Katzaroff gave the life mask to violinist and composer Eve Hungerford, [8] who was very much interested in Beethoven. Beethoven's life mask (dated "1827?") was presented to the National Library of Australia by her nephew of and is part of Hungerford's manuscript collection of papers.

Most of Beethoven's early works and those to which he did not give an opus number were listed by Georg Kinsky and Hans Halm as " WoO", works without opus number. Kinsky and Halm also listed 18 doubtful works in their appendix ("WoO Anhang"). In addition, some minor works not listed with opus numbers or in the WoO list have Hess catalogue numbers.
