About this deal

The bottom layer of plant leaves are often deeply lobed and covered in fine hairs. The leaves of the plant are also superhydrophobic, which means highly water-repellent. The plants can also have small yellow or yellowish green flowers that usually bloom in late spring or summer. More than 200 microspecies of Alchemilla vulgaris are known to exist in Europe. These perennial wildflowers, members of the rose family, are sometimes grown in gardens - mainly for their leaves, which collect sparkling water droplets. Description

This Rose Family native of Europe is somewhat available in commercial herbal trade. However, it is a very easy plant to grow, at least here in the Pacific Northwest where I live. The leaves are most commonly used medicinally, but also the flowering stalks. The roots were used more commonly in the past and have a stronger astringent property. Interestingly, Lady’s Mantle is a medicinal plant that I find under utilized in my herbal community. Many people seem to know about Lady’s Mantle, but few seem to use it frequently. Alchemilla vulgaris subsp. acutiloba (Opiz) Dostál in Klíč Úplné Kvĕt. ČSR: 364 (1954), nom. illeg.

Distribution

There are several species to choose from, although the most popular by far, and the most readily available, is Alchemilla mollis– the go-to choice and a staple of cottage gardens. It’sa classic partner in rose gardens and a versatile and on-trend cut flower.

This plant really shines during the postpartum time period. Most notably, in my work as a doula and with lactation support I have recommended this herb to women who have expressed disappointment with the tone of their breasts after lactation. After several weeks of applying daily compresses of strong Lady’s Mantle tea and drinking the tea or taking a tincture daily (ratios and recipes follow), several women have expressed satisfaction with the results. I learned about using Lady’s Mantle for this indication from Matthew Wood. In his book, The Earthwise Herbal: A Complete Guide to Old World Medicinal Plants, Matthew Wood writes, “It lifts tissue and structures that have become bogged down: sagging breasts after lactation and abdominal tissue following childbirth” (2008). This is in tune with what I have seen with my post-natal clients. Alchemilla vulgaris var. acutiloba (Opiz) Stoj., Stef. & Kitan. in Fl. Bulg., ed. 4, 1: 548 (1966), nom. illeg.

The flowers, which are in bloom from June to August, are numerous and small, only about 1/8 inch in diameter, yellow-green in colour, in loose, divided clusters at the end of the freely-branching flower-stems, each on a short stalk, or pedicle. There are no petals, the calyx is four-cleft, with four conspicuous little bracteoles that have the appearance of outer and alternate segments of the calyx. There are four stamens, inserted on the mouth of the calyx, their filaments jointed. McRae JM, Kennedy JA.
