About this deal

OBJECTIVE OF ABOVE AND BELOW: The objective of Above and Below is to be the player with the most Village Points. NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 2 to 4 Players MATERIALS: 1 Reputation Board, 4 Player Boards, 4 Cubes, 36 Villagers, 1 Round Marker, 20 Potion Tokens, 10 Cider Tokens, 7 Dice, 25 Cave Cards, 9 Key House Cards, 6 Star House Cards, 1 Starting Player Card, 24 Outpost Cards, 81 Goods Tokens, 4 Starting House Cards, 25 House Cards, and Instructions TYPE OF GAME : Area Control Board Game AUDIENCE: Ages 13 and Up Liquid Woman: The liquid woman is unsettling. When she joins your village, you lose one reputation. To play the game, players will take turns assigning their villagers actions to do. Each villager has a unique ability, so you will need to choose their actions wisely. Once the encounter book and the dice are placed near the playing area, the game is ready to begin. GAMEPLAY Will you take someone with you on the cave expedition? Or does your villager have skills better suited to another important job?

There are two numbers at the top of each good slot. The left number indicates how many village points each good in that pile is worth at the end of the game. In the example below, if a player had two fruit goods at the end of the game, each of those goods would be worth 2 village points (for a total of 4 village points). At its core, Above and Below is a narrative-driven tableau builder. Players take on the role of small tribes looking to rebuild their community after barbarians ravaged the countryside. With a starting band of three villagers, players will take actions to build new buildings, train new villagers, and harvest crops above and below ground. At the end of the game, the player with the most reputation gains 5 extra village points. The player with the second-most reputation gains 3 extra village points. The player with the third-most reputation gains 2 extra village points. If playing with two players, only the player with the most reputation gets the bonus: he gains 3 points (this is why there is a person symbol with the number "2" in this village point symbol).

There is a whole host of buildings and outposts, some of which are very expensive so by the time you get enough cash together to buy one its round six already, which in itself is an issue; getting to a point where you have the money to buy the more expensive buildings takes a good few rounds, by which point someone else might’ve bought the one you want first.

Place the coin tokens, good tokens, cider tokens, and potion tokens near the side. This is the supply. Place one cider token on the reputation board in the area with a cider symbol.Realizing the potential for your village, you will need to lead your village to greatness and develop your villagers to meet their full potential. There are six special villagers in the base game. They are the Liquid Woman, Glogo, Cave Cat (two of these), and Metal Man (two of these) villagers. At the start of the game, place these villagers face up near the play area. They can only be obtained through specific encounters in the explore book. Each of these villagers has special rules. One of my measures with games that feature money is how end-round income works. You begin a game of Above and Below with seven coins, more if you are not the first player. But your starting income is only four coins. That means in round two, probably round three, you are going to have less money than you begin play with, especially if you do something silly like, I don’t know, buy any buildings or train any additional villagers. First, the player slides one of his villagers from the ready area of his player board to the exhausted area of his player board. The villager must have a quill symbol.

If playing with four players, place the two starting villagers that do not have a hammer symbol in the grass area with a moon symbol--the "exhausted area". (In the first round of play, each player will only be able to use one villager.Below ground, you ask? Yep, the new village is built over a series of underground tunnels that require exploration. Even a shallow tunnel dive reveals promise—treasure, goods, and other surprises await. On a turn, players have to exhaust one or more of their villagers to take actions, and when seven rounds have been played, scores are tallied to determine which tribe is the greatest of them all. Taking turns, the heroes and zombies must try to meet these conditions and mark off their objectives in a battle for survival. But watch out – if a hero and zombie happen to land on the same square, they must battle to the death in combat that is controlled by six-sided dice.
