About this deal

They took their place in line behind a woman with several baskets of papayas balanced on her head, and only then did Leila let go of Malik. Idir: The vengeful spirit who kidnaps Nadia. Holds a thousand-year long grudge against Karina’s ancestor, the founder of Ziran. Needs to learn to let things go. Karina and Malik continued to be very complex and well developed characters. I still really enjoyed Karina as a narrator and her journey through the story, especially during the final 30%. I am really sad to say that I found Malik's chapters almost unbearable to get through. His anxiety and the way it presented itself in the form of severely negative thoughts about himself, plus the self-harm, started making me upset. Because of this, I had to skim parts of his chapters. The second book of the series, ''A Psalm of Storms and Silence", will be released on August 31 2021.

The story was also a tad too long for me. It lost my attention at places, and I do think it could have been tightened up with some edits. But overall, I enjoyed this and plan to continue with the series. Altogether, A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is just a dazzling, refreshing book. Malik and Karina are compelling characters with complicated goals and aspirations. The magic of Sonande feels new and exciting, but also dangerous and dark. The trials of the Solstasia competition weave together with the lavish parties of the wealthy as well as the riotous revelry of the lower city in Ziran, creating a complex tapestry of culture that is simply enchanting and original. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is a book full of dark magic and even darker fates, so once you’ve gathered your courage and your trustiest sword, scroll below to the date of the week on which you were born to see what the gods have in store for you!

Despite the panic roiling in his stomach, Malik gave a small smile. Gege is a bad influence. You shouldn’t listen to her. A Psalm of Storms and Silence was really not what I was expecting from a sequel and... it was not necessarily ina good way. Brown's writing was still engrossing and I loved the world-building very very much, but the pace was a bit too slow for me during the first 65% or so. Though customers swarmed over the stands, most left the latter untouched; supernatural beings, known as the grim folk, were the stuff of stories whispered on dark nights, nothing more. Malik knew from experience that the charms never worked and oftentimes left one’s skin itchy and green. And I absolutely loved how well mental illness was represented through both Malik's and Karina's characters. It was respectful and accurate, showing the readers exactly what happens to a person that experienced this horrible sensation. The chemistry between the two enemies was off the charts. 😍 *chef's kiss*😍. Despite their intentions with each other they work very well together, their scenes were full of 🔥🥵🔥🥵 and they most definitely care about each other dispite what they'll tell you.

Another of my favourite things was the description of Karinas’ despair and anguish after losing her mother. Roseanne A. Brown did such a beautiful job of describing the pain and emptiness of losing someone you love, I really felt for Karina in those moments. And I’ve found another favorite book! When I first read the synopsis I knew this was a book that I needed in my life. I’m happy that I actually took my time with it because the world building was something to behold. It was so much more complex than I thought. Every minute was riddled with stories and folklore and it was all just so magnificent that I couldn’t really put the book down (had to force myself to most of the time). It wasn’t in an info dumping way but everything was told when it needed to be. You never got to know something unless it was the absolute perfect moment for it. Even the Outer Wall had been decorated in honor of Solstasia, with banners hanging from the towers depicting each of the seven patron deities—from Gyata the Lion, who ruled over the Sun Alignment, to Adanko the Hare, Malik’s patron, who ruled over the Life Alignment. Karina lost everything after a violent coup left her without her kingdom or her throne. Now the most wanted person in Sonande, her only hope of reclaiming what is rightfully hers lies in a divine power hidden in the long-lost city of her ancestors. NO NO NO. There was no tension and they hated each other and then they slowly realised that each other is not that bad. THAT IS WHAT I WANTED. But instead I go this half assed attempt and the best trope. IM SO MADDDDDDBy the way, said Aminata as they flattened themselves against a wall to make way for a team of dancers leading an irate warthog. I didn’t know you knew that song in all those languages. And when I win, said the bard, you will give me the honor of calling you mine for the rest of the night."

Malik and his sisters want to earn money and seek to be admitted to the Solstasia competition. When a spirit abducts his younger sister, the batter decided is Malik’s sister’s life in lieu of Karina’s life and here starts Malik’s vengeful journey. Also, the magic system was cool. The way it's connected to the story's unique astrology system and spirituality was just chef's kiss - I kinda wanted more detail on the patron deities and their eras though. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is a YA novel written by Roseanne A. Brown, part of a fantasy romance duology. The different types of sibling relationships--the love between Malik and his siblings, Karina's complicated feelings toward Hanane--were an interesting dichotomy Karina rolled her eyes, wondering why she’d expected any other response from her maid. Convincing a fish to swim on land would be easier than convincing Aminata to relax for even a single night. In spite of its dull moments, I would still recommend this book/series. It is definitely worth reading. The evil spirit says that he has to kill the princess by Solstasia's end or they will kill Malik's sister. So Malik becomes a champion to get closer to the princess. Solstasia is a festival celebrating a comet that passes once in every 50 years. The cheers of the audience drowned out Karina’s last notes. She smiled sweetly at the bard, who looked ready to toss his instrument to the ground. Years of language tutors have finally paid off, said Karina, not hiding the smugness in her voice as Aminata rolled her eyes. Tunde: One of the seven Champions of Solstasia. Malik’s (only) friend and Karina’s ex, which makes their conversations aaaaaakward. A true bro.

Malik brushed the curls from Nadia’s eyes. She had always been small for her age; now, after months of malnutrition, she was so tiny that Malik sometimes feared a strong enough breeze might carry her away forever. As Aminata sulked beside her, Karina kept her eyes trained on the musician currently commanding the crowd, a stout, oud-playing bard with a mustache so perfectly coiled that it had to be fake. Appearance aside, the man had skill, and from the easy way he swaggered around the circular stage in the center of the room, he knew it. Aminata frowned, realizing at once what had triggered the migraine. We should go before it gets worse, she suggested in that careful tone people used whenever Karina’s grief discomforted them. The plot was so much more than I could have imagined based on the ending of the first book. I kept being surprised by all the twists and turns and the new directions the story was developing in, and especially the second half of the book was wild. As a result, I read that in about a day; I simply sped through it, because all I wanted to do was keep reading. Neither a borrower nor a lender be, mostly because your odds of coming across an enchanted treasure horde with a terrible past are far higher than zero. This is a good week to try something new, Water-Aligned friends! Except making a bargain with a cursed spirit king, it’s never a good week to do that. I mean, I can’t stop you, but it is pretty high on the list of things that aren’t exactly great ways to spend your weekend. On the other hand, Karina is grieving the loss of her assassinated mother which drives her to pursue The Rite of Resurrection that requires the beating heart of a king to perform the ritual. Karina devises a meticulous strategy to acquire the same which is where Malik comes into play! Old friends and new enemies will both be popping into your life…or wait, perhaps it’s new friends and old enemies? Either way, some combination of friends and enemies will be appearing, and it’ll be your job to figure out who is who. Make sure you categorize them correctly, because nothing ruins game night faster than casting a seven generation long curse on the wrong person! Also, try something new with your appearance, mostly for fun and also because a new appearance will be very useful on your next reconnaissance mission into an enemy prince’s stronghold.
