About this deal

Mysteries of the distant and recent past, along with present concerns, occupy Jonathan’s attention in the most recent Jonathan Creek special. By the time Danse Macabre’s finished playing it looks like it’s going to go hard on the horror and the grand guignol. All of the elements are in place for a slice of classic Creek, though it takes the titular detective nearly half of the special’s running time to get properly involved.

And let’s not forget Patrick Tyree, the grunting vengeful con that Creek helped convict who was on his tail in a weird subplot. Certainly the TV guide synopsis sounds like it’s going to be a bloody thrill every minute, minus the boobs, with talk of ‘sinister twists’, ‘gruesome rituals…frighteningly revived’, and ‘horrifying consequences’.Meanwhile Jonathan is stalked by an adversary from a previous case who also has revenge on his mind. In addition to appearances in Medici and Versailles, he has appeared in several genre pieces including Midsomer Murders, Father Brown and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.

Guest stars: Griff Rhys Jones, Maxine Peake, Debbie Arnold, Andrew Tiernan, Peter Hughes, Adjoa Andoh and Brett Fancy. Which is a shame, as Creek's irritating, shallow wife finally seems to be thawing enough to support him in his endeavours. There is also the film Willow which he starred in and he will also star in the TV series which is supposed to be released in 2022.But god help me, this is still Jonathan Creek, a drama that began so long ago that it feels antiquated compared to current mystery/crime dramas, and yet I still have time for it, even if it’s not time well spent. One of the first things that I will say about this episode is that it is an absolutely perfect blend of old-school horror, eccentric comedy and Sherlock Holmes-style detection. In James May: The Christmas Reassembler (BBC4) there are at least as many elements, but the effect of piecing them together is considerably less entertaining. Pictured: Happier days… As the series wore on the impossibilities became slightly more abtruse — series four’s ‘The Tailor’s Dummy’ is probably about a man changing race on the spot, but also about a man jumping out of a window; ‘The Chequered Box’ has a weird impossibility which could be resolved in about four seconds but isn’t really an impossibility from the key character’s perspective; and whatever the hell ‘Gorgon’s Wood’ is about I honestly don’t know.

Jonathan, for his part, is more concerned as to how a piece of chewing gum got moved from one potted plant to another at the crime scene. His old fellow investigator, Joey Ross, draws him into a complex case involving a secret society, seemingly supernatural events at a girls’ boarding school, and the miraculous disappearance of a body in front of three witnesses made all the more baffling with photographic evidence that the body was definitely there. The detection-based scenes are well-thought out and filled with interesting deductions and fiendish schemes. Then came series 5, a mere three episodes, including an inverted impossibility — we’re shown how it happens, but the other characters including Jonathan are unaware — and something about a phone number that was so embarrassing I’m surprised they didn’t can the whole thing there and then.
