It has a mostly objective approach in which each artist is respected while having a slightly contemporary tone through phrasing and word choice. It is a spectacular book to have in rediscovering one's passion for Art, and to explore those paintings and artists that everyone "knows", but yet not actually really know. But one thing that struck me is this "primitivist" (garbage label, especially to describe a trained artist who "imitates" "primitive" art) who had a 14 year old Tahitian "mistress" who he painted in a sexual way and they didn't pass comment on it at all, just acted as if that's totally ok. Grossed me out but that seems the normal way of talking about this disgusting child abuser because hey he did good art! The breadth of material is astounding, covering artists I'd never heard of in all my art history classes. They do at least try and they have some stuff on like Chinese ink painting though so it's better than some. Identity politics-based quips in a section ostensibly about explaining to the audience the basics of art was unexpected and came across as angry squawking in amongst an otherwise detached presentation which is cleanly carried out through the rest of the book. Overall I did like this and it is impressive that almost everything you can think of about art is covered. This book is not a specialized look at one particular period or a handful of canonized artists, but devotes a good amount of space to artists we are not as familiar with, placed in context with other artists and works we are more familiar with.

Truly comprehensive in scope, Art shows you masterpieces from over 700 artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, and Van Gogh. Each artistic movement — from the Italian Renaissance to Impressionism and Pop Art — is clearly explained, alongside its origins and influences, styles and techniques, and typical subject matter. This is a truly magnificent art book about exploring different artists informations, timelines, variety of paintings from different artists through exploring diferent techniques . Andrew Graham-Dixon has presented six landmark series on art for the BBC, including the acclaimed A History of British Art, Renaissance and Art of Eternity, as well as numerous individual documentaries on art and artists. Picture-packed pages help you to identify the characteristics of each artist’s work, and follow how it changed through his or her lifetime. Not surprising and obviously there's space reasons for not going too wide but still it's a big omission. An invaluable reference book for any art lover, it showcases the works; everything from Italian baroque painting and African art to contemporary art history. It also inspires me to see more art in the world and arms me with more knowledge with which to view these works.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. It also looks at cultures around the world but there is a focus on the West (which may disappoint some people). The definitive visual guide to over 2,500 paintings and sculptures from around the world, from prehistory to the 21st century. When you claim to be the "definitive visual guide" of art itself there is always going to be room to point out where such-and-such a thing wasn't included. More than 700 artists from all periods and cultures — Western and non-Western, right up to the present day — are profiled alongside key examples of their work.
