I rate this book 4 stars because it teaches you alot about what people go through and how they feel. High school senior Katherine is preparing for college when she meets and begins dating her classmate Michael, and they swiftly fall for one another.For many years she led a double life, sitting out the consciousness-raising circles and bra burnings of her time but finding her own private way to buck societal conventions. What are Deenie’s feelings toward the handicapped kids at her school, Barbara Curtis, and Old Lady Murray? Another hallmark is Blume’s ability to make a child feel heard, and perhaps suspect that the author is reading her most shameful thoughts. When Buddy Brader and Steve Hildrick sit with Deenie and Janet, respectively, at the movies but nobody sits with Midge, Deenie comments in her internal monologue she wishes the boys had a tall friend who would also get a crush on Midge.

Thelma justifies her insistence that Deenie pursue a modeling career and that Helen become a doctor or lawyer by saying that she just "wanted better" for her children. I didn't really enjoy this book, because the main character is so obtuse, incredibly ableist, and it's painfully obvious she's going to learn a lesson and become less ableist because of her own condition - scoliosis.K. newspaper published an interview with her with the headline: “I’m behind JK Rowling 100 per cent.
