About this deal

It’s followed by ‘Empress of the Damned’, a glitching, pulsing anthem fuelled by the high, airy voice of Canadian electropop star Lights . It’s the consequence of caring so much for aesthetic to true musical inspiration is cast so far aside, it’s barely on the board anymore.

GUNSHIP is an entity that has, since the first moment that I heard them, continually captured my imagination through their songs, aesthetic, and ability to be unique amidst a host of synthwave acts that rely too heavily on a single aspect of this burgeoning scene.Maybe it’s the beats, the industrial overtones, synth’s irrevocable connection to horror movies, or something else entirely. On their self-titled debut one of the songs that stood out for everyone was the nuclear powered “Tech Noir” which featured an introduction by none other than god of synth soundtracks, John Carpenter. There’s also some cool bits of The Prodigy-esque styling to crop up on Blood For The Blood God and Nuclear Date Night, and in general, the front half that’s loaded with guest stars makes for the most appealing fare, if only to see how they’re all used and arranged. It’s the thing that’s always made Gunship felt like such a sterile product, an act built on the presence of references than any greater application of them.

Weaponized Love” feels like their love letter to Nine Inch Nails with its lusty lyrics and beats and “Holographic Heart” – which features Britta Phillips – is pure Madonna worship in the best way. You’d think they’d be more memorable overall, given how ready their fanbase was to pounce on any assertions that Dark All Day wasn’t a good album (which it wasn’t), but maybe that’s just how it goes when there’s so little musical nutrition to go on. And so, when he’s left to fend for himself as a singer here, there’s a distinct lack of awareness among Gunship of how prominent that weakness can be. While in some cases this could be seen as a negative thing, for Unicorn and GUNSHIP in general this certainly works.Unicorn is quite the accomplishment in scope, guests, atmosphere, sex appeal, and general badassery. The review consistently leans towards negative commentary, and the language used suggests a level of personal frustration or disappointment with the album. In the last eight years, they’ve released just two albums to date, Unicorn marking their third album and, unsurprisingly, it’s just as jam-packed with features from across the musical spectrum as ever. One of the potential downfalls of this genre is how it is often a rose-colored look at the past by nearly constantly invoking nostalgia. Rather than look over a barren wasteland of the future this is an anthem of survival and perseverance that is impossible not to sing along with.
