About this deal

Unique to these boots is their two-part system. The first layer is a soft internal liner for sleeping in, with an ankle drawcord and multiple calf snaps to easily adjust fit. The second part of the boot is an easily detachable foam sole and an outer shell that’s made from weather-resistant Pertex Endurance fabric. On the outer shell, there are drawcords at the calf and ankle to keep the boot secure when walking. These are some of the most durable down booties we tested. The next thing is to find the end of the ball in the section that you’ve just taken out (I’m going to call this the “inside ball”) and see what colour it is. Ignore the colour at the very end of the ball and start with the next colour in – this is because you don’t know where the yarn was cut in the mill so you can’t use the first colour as a comparison. Now take a look at the yarn that’s at the other end of the section, still attached to the main ball, and that’s what you’re going to match. Pull some of the yarn out of the inside ball (pulling from the centre of the ball) and lay it out in front of you so that you can see how the colours change, and then do the same with the “outside ball” The booties won’t be much for warmth if there’s no way to trap in the heat they're producing. Therefore, many pairs come with enclosures around the ankles, like elastic cuffs or cinch draw-strings. Either works and deciding which feels or fits best is the user's call. Just ensure the cuffs fit comfortably yet securely to keep warm air in and stop cold air from getting in. It’s not really necessary to use a stitch marker to indicate the end of your round when using DPNs, although I find it useful to mark needle one. I use a safety pin, which I pin into the knitting on needle one – although more attractive markers are available!

For us, what sets them apart from other minimalist down booties is their superior comfort. Not only is the down very soft, but the cinch cord also adds ankle adjustment to keep them secure on your feet. And the 1/4’’ foam insole adds comfort, support, and durability. Ultimately the deciding factor of a down bootie’s weight is its materials. Down insulation, both synthetic and natural, tends to be pretty lightweight when it’s dry. In terms of exterior fabrics, the nylon and polyester materials these down booties are constructed from are also conveniently lightweight.Depending how easily you found your match, you may well need to wind your single pulled-apart ball of yarn into two properly neat balls ready for working with. Do this however you like – use a ball winder, a nostepinne or wind by hand – remembering to make sure that both balls will start from the same place. Change to 2.5mm needles. At this point, change to a short circular, magic loop or divide the stitches across DPNs and join into a circle, place marker. Down is the warmest and lightest, but it comes at a premium price and doesn’t do well in wet conditions. Synthetic is less expensive and works well even when wet. Down is rated by fill power. The higher the fill power, the greater the down will loft, creating more warmth per weight. If there’s an area that’s stained or especially dirty, dab at it with a touch of mild soap and a sponge before washing. Round 3: K1, SSK, K to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, SSK, K to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1.

Now we are going to change to our 2.5mm circular needle. All you have to do is to knit the stitches from the DPN onto your circular needle for the next round, continuing to knit in K2, P2 rib. These are sized small (up to size 6 UK), medium (up to size 8 UK) and large (up to size 10 UK), so would fit most feet. Being too large isn’t a problem, but being too small would be. Hold the two DPNs with your left hand. Insert the wool needle purl-wise into the first stitch on the front DPN and pull the yarn through. Don’t take the stitch off the DPN.A down bootie’s cuff height refers to the height or length of the upper portion of the booties that covers the ankle and lower leg. Different cuff heights in down booties offer varying levels of coverage and functionality. The options listed in this guide have lower ankle and mid leg coverage options, but there are a few down bootie options on the market that provide protection all the way to the knee. Low or Ankle Cuff Our favorite synthetic-fill options include the Outdoor Research Tundra Trax Booties. Made with 85% recycled materials, they kept our feet just as warm as some of the other natural down bootie options and because they are made with synthetic insulation, they are reasonably priced for their durability. Once you have a reasonable amount of yarn wrapped, take your forefinger out of the yarn, leaving your thumb inside. The layer of Intuition foam — which is a blended closed-cell design — in the footbed must be celebrated for its all-day comfort, custom molded contours, and warmth. Inside, the layer of synthetic fur is soft and cozy. If you’ve scrolled through our list of down bootie options, you likely noticed that some of these products have outsole tread while others have little to none. Tread sets the bar on how much mileage you can get out of a pair of down booties.

Assuming that you’re working with 60 stitches, knit the first 16 stitches onto your first needle, continuing in K2 P2 rib.Continue to knit each round until desired length before start of heel (for me, this is about 75 rounds in total including the rib). Now knit the next 14 stitches onto your second needle. This can feel very fiddly if you’ve not done it before, but it will get easier as you join your knitting into the round. It doesn’t matter whether you needles are on top of each other or underneath – and they’ll probably swing about a bit as well whilst you’re adding new needles. Just take it slowly. Some down booties are designed with an elastic cuff closure that fits snug around the ankle or lower leg. The elasticity stretches and conforms to the wearer’s leg, thus providing a secure closure without any added bulk from toggles or strings. Elastic cuffs are simple and can be comfortable if the fit is just right. However, if they are too loose or tight, you are limited in adjustability. Our choice for a down bootie with an elastic closure? The Montane Icarus Hut Boot Style Slippers.

Most down booties are constructed with a nylon exterior. Nylon is a synthetic material made to be tear and water resistant. It is typically lightweight, and breathable depending on the stitching. Nylon is used because it is versatile and can help the down booties maintain their best insulation abilities, thus keeping your feet toasty warm. The Baffin CUSH Booty utilizes a reinforced Nylon, making it both durable and water resistant. Even better, you can fully customize these puppies. If you’re only venturing down to 20-30 degrees F, we’d recommend going with the standard 850-fill. We like that, for added measure, the sole is made with an ultralight, water-resistant Primaloft Aerogel insert, which offers continuous insulation even if compressed. The booties close around the ankle with a cinched drawstring and run to mid-calf, making them a warm option. The exterior fabric of down booties is an important component to consider when shopping for a pair. The exterior fabric is what protects the overall shoe from various elements and can help improve the insulation abilities of the interior as well. If you find that your knitting is turning inside out, don’t worry. It’s very easy to fix – just put your hand inside your knitting and pull it the right way out! We’ve all done it, it’s one of those fun beginner things! 🙂
