Leaking bathroom cold tap: Isolate the supply from the cistern. Turn off the gate valve on the supply pipe, this can normally be found on the supply pipe close to the cistern. If no gate valve, isolate the supply to the cistern and drain it down. Find and remove the screw
Step 3 – Remove Handle/Headgear: Using a small Philips screwdriver, remove the retaining screw and then grip the handle/headgear and pull it up and off the spindles A dribble from the top of the tap is usually a result of the Gland seals being worn. Sometimes there is a gland nut, which can be undone to reveal the O-ring sealing the gland to the head. (see “Individual elements that make up a pillar tap” image at top). Other times there is a circlip holding the spindle to the head. This can be removed carefully as shown below. Before fixing anything, the first job to do is to identify exactly where the leak is coming from. With a mixer tap this is fairly easy as there is really only 2 points it can leak from; the top of the spout or the bottom. Cleaning the ceramic discs is the most difficult way to fix dripping taps. But, sometimes, it is your only option if you don’t want tofit a new tap.

The final area of common leaks is at the base of the spout where it runs into the tap body. As most spouts swing side to side, over time this movement can wear down any seals at the base and thus cause leaks. In the case of the snap ring, this is usually between the spout and the body and is sometimes hidden by a cover that is screwed down or held with a grub screw at the rear. Your water supply may be cut off; this could be an isolated incident or could be a larger issue affecting your neighbourhood. If only one of the taps in your home is not working, then you will need to repair just that tap. If the issue is with your water company, give them a call and they should be able to remedy it. This also isn’t helped by the fact that may people also pull down and apply weight to the spout which in turn starts to pull it from the body preventing the washer or O-ring from sealing correctly.
With today’s emphasis on caring for the environment, any form of leak, no matter how small, should be sorted immediately. If you are on a metered water supply then this will also be costing you a small fortune, so save yourself some money and get it sorted!
