About this deal

Weighted blankets have become popular with adults suffering from insomnia or anxiety, who say that the product’s comforting pressure makes sleep come more easily. The CPSC, a federal agency responsible for ensuring that consumers are protected from dangerous products, has become aware of at least one report of a fatality involving a weighted infant product, a spokesperson said on Monday. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics says that “Infant sleep clothing is preferable to blankets and other coverings to keep the infant warm. A large percentage of infants who die of SIDS are found with their head covered by bedding. Therefore, no pillows, sheets, blankets, or any other items that could obstruct infant breathing or cause overheating should be in the bed.” Getting unsafe products off the shelves will help make sleep environments safer, experts say, but parents and caregivers also need to learn more about how to keep sleeping infants safe and why the AAP cautions against certain products and environments. While some parents may know about safe sleep but choose not to follow recommendations for various reasons, others may have no idea their baby’s sleep arrangement is unsafe. According to this study, the “deep touch pressure” offered by weighted blankets “gives subjects the feelings of safety, relaxation and comfort.” This study explores the safety and therapeutic effects, with the majority of respondents reporting lower anxiety. (This goes for babies, too!)

Babies should never sleep on a couch or chair, nor should they sleep on an adult who is on a couch or chair.Don’t Use Sleep Positioners - Wedges, mats, or anti-roll type pillows are not a safe place for your baby to sleep. Just because something is available for sale doesn’t mean it’s safe and we suggest you do your research before using any of these. The FDA warns that sleep positioners can cause suffocation. Dan Bergels, ASTM International’s director of communications, didn’t answer CR’s questions about the ongoing standard-making process, noting that the wearable blankets subcommittee would discuss the AAP’s letter in a meeting in August.

Consider the room temperature and how many layers you need. Generally, you’ll want to dress your baby in the same amount of layers that you’d have for sleep (or maybe one additional layer if you feel it’s needed). But some companies, including Nested Bean and Dreamland Baby, are now marketing weighted sleep products—including wearable blankets and swaddles—for babies, even newborns. That’s raising alarm among pediatricians and many product safety experts, including those at Consumer Reports, who say that these products are being sold with no safety standards in place and little to no evidence that they’re safe. When new parents are exhausted and overwhelmed in the hospital or at initial prenatal visits, it can be hard for them to absorb all of the education provided,” Carlin said. “However, if we can create positive attitudes around safe sleep practices and provide education during pregnancy, parents are more likely plan to use these practices.” I like that they're long sleeve, so we just put the baby either in a onesie or just his diaper underneath, or in the winter we can layer…. Cheaper option than most too." While that system can in some cases come up with meaningful standards, critics worry that it can be too heavily slanted toward an industry that may have a vested interest in watering down protections. Some of those expressing concern are members of the task force creating the standard, including advocates.

REVIEW

The difference between Burt's Bees wearable blankets and competitors' is clear the moment you touch them: Burt's Bees material is outrageously soft, high-quality fabric that feels amazing. Parents also like the heavy-duty front zipper, which has an interior zipper guard to keep it from snagging on material, so you won't be fighting it for nighttime diaper changes. This wearable blanket comes in a number of unique, beautiful colors and patterns, giving you plenty of options. Waiting for the emergence of confirmatory data about these concerns while these products proliferate is an unacceptable outcome when each of those data points will be a family whose lives are forever marked by unfathomable tragedy of their infant dying from a sleep-related death,” the letter reads. I will admit that we didn’t experience a major difference in the length of her sleep stretches or overall consistency of her nights. Our wonderful daughter’s preference was to feed every three hours, day or night, and her new blanket didn’t seem to change that.

Medical experts say that even the “gentle pressure” described by the manufacturers of weighted sleep products can be dangerous for infants for multiple reasons. Your baby still has the Moro reflex but is breaking out of the swaddle or doesn’t like to be swaddled. Provides sensory input to relax babies into sleep and is especially helpful for babies who struggle to sleep or are used to being held to fall asleep Parents may believe that infant sleep products are heavily regulated by federal agencies and must pass stringent safety tests before they can be sold. But that hasn’t been the case. Products that don’t fall into categories that have long been regulated, like cribs or bassinets, have been allowed to go to market without such safety rules. (Other regulations, related to additional safety aspects of a product, such as a material’s flammability, lead content and product labeling, may apply.) Nested Bean commissioned its own study, which involved incrementally increasing the weight of an object on the chest of babies from newborn to 6 months old. The unpublished study (which wasn’t peer-reviewed) involved five babies who were observed for up to 2 minutes at a time while awake. The researchers concluded that placing the weights on babies for longer periods of time—such as overnight—may pose the potential for both fatigue and a decline of oxygen “into unsafe levels.”The American Academy of Pediatrics cautions that any loose bedding, pillows, and even stuffed animals pose hazards to infants because of the suffocation risk. Wearable blankets, alternatively, zip on and stay on. As long as it fits properly, there is no way that it can cover a baby's face. That's why wearable blankets are safe and loose (or free) blankets are not. Nested Bean told CR that the company values AAP’s input but that its own research and its “experience of more than a decade on the market show that Nested Bean’s minimally weighted infant sleepwear products are safe and effective.”

There’s no regulation of these,” says Rachel Moon, MD, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the chair of the AAP’s task force on sudden infant death syndrome. “People assume that if something is on the market, somebody has deemed it safe,” she says, but that’s not the case in the U.S. Using the size guide as a starting point, you’ll want to know how much your baby weighs. You should not move up to the next size until your child has reached the minimum weight recommendation. So even if your baby is already 6 months, if they are not yet 15 pounds, you should keep them in the 0 - 6-month size until they do reach that weight. But that study looked at infants who wore the swaddles for only 30-minute-long sessions and were under constant supervision. And the AAP, in its warning letter last month, noted that “There is no evidence in the peer-reviewed scientific literature evaluating the safety of weighted sleep products on typical, healthy infants, and there is also nothing published regarding their use in an unmonitored setting.” You know it’s coming. If you’ve chosen to swaddle your baby for optimal comfort, the time will eventually come to transition out of it. There are two options here: fast or slow.
