The problem is, based on ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’ – a muddled album that claims to love pop, but seems thoroughly averse to having any kind of fun – it seems he’s mostly the former.In Metro Weekly, Sean Maurnier scored this release 3 out of 5 stars, stating that there is "definitely more of a radio-ready pop sensibility to it" than Bugg's previous music, but continuing that "swinging for more of a pop sound also produces some weird moments" and praising that "the album tends to be at its strongest on the tracks that showcase his indie rock sensibility and his gift for guitar work". The songs on Saturday Night, Sunday Morning are the kind you could easily see getting placed in the background of TV shows or used in commercials. Taken on their own, these are fine songs and Bugg's reedy alto is showcased to nice effect throughout.
