About this deal

Crop circles require meticulous planning. As well as weathering minor inconveniences such as hay fever and rain, the pair must also remain vigilant against interruption. As it turns out, these rural nights are buzzing not just with wildlife but with fly-tippers, confused nonagenarians, and sloshed lords of the manor. Calvert and Redbone are two friends who make crop circles over the course of the summer of 1989, in the fields of Wiltshire,’ said Benjamin. ‘They kind of exist on the fringes of society and only really feel at peace when they're out in the fields at night. So the novel is set entirely over the course of ten different weekends under the covers of darkness.’ Benjamin Myers is fast making the contested boundary between history and folklore his own. The ballad of Redbone and Calvert somehow combines the ease and warmth of T he Offing with the sinew and menace of The Gallows Pole -- JOHN MITCHINSON The glue that holds this story together is the relationship and development of our two protagonists. We're treated to a small cast, two ageing men. Calvert, who is a traumatized veteran and Redbone a chaotic, rogue who is troubled in his own way by the visions he has which they transfer to the canvas of the fields in their nightly raids. We get to know these characters over the course of the book, we walk alongside them as they chat the fat. They were strangers at the story's opening and by the conclusion, they have become dear friends and we are completely and utterly invested in their lives.

People just want to believe in something bigger than all this. Something beyond. It takes them away from the mundane details of their tiny lives. You can’t blame them.’

Reviews

Recipient of the Roger Deakin Award and first published by Bluemoose Books, Myers' novel The Gallows Pole was published to acclaim in 2017 and was winner of the Walter Scott Prize 2018 - the world's largest prize for historical fiction. It has been published in the US by Third Man Books and is currently in development for screen adaptation. Over the course of a burning hot summer, two very different men - traumatized ex-soldier Calvert, and affable and chaotic Redbone - set out nightly in a decrepit camper van to undertake an extraordinary project. Under cover of darkness, the two men traverse the fields of rural England in secret, forming crop circles in elaborate and mysterious patterns, designs so intricate that they inspire the kind of awe that the ancient Gothic cathedral in nearby Salisbury once inspired. Bathed in moonlight, Myers’s land thrums with more ancient reverberations, too. There is, he writes, “an under-England, a chthonic place of hidden rivers and buried relics, of the bones of extinct animals and battle-slain bodies”. His main characters are acutely aware of it – their industry, it’s hinted, flows from it – and the humbling sense of perspective this confers is balm and inspiration. Nobody does troubled figures in a stunning landscape like Ben Myers. He’s a major force in the English novel and he gets better with every book.” — Max Porter, author of Grief is the Thing with Feathers

One of my books of the year … It’s the best thing Myers has done.”―Robert Macfarlane, Big Issue Books of the Year Der perfekte Kreis“ von Benjamin Myers ist ein ganz ganz leises Buch, das sich mühelos in mein Herz verpflanzt hat. Sie wollen den „perfekten Kreis“ gestalten, obwohl Myers seinen Protagonisten Redbone sagen lässt: Mark asked, ‘You've worked previously as a music journalist. I wonder, was that always the ambition, or was writing novels always your aspiration?’ A darkly beautiful dual-timeline novel with a captivating mystery, for fans of Diane Setterfield, Kate Morton, Kate Mosse and Kiran Millwood Hargrave. Under the surface though, it is a fascinating study of male friendship, set against the land of the rural landscape, always a real feature in Myers's writing, and present in all of his novels. A person with an interest in the crop circle phenomenon. Such individuals may be of varying belief, sanity and intelligence. As a journalist he has written about the arts and nature for publications including New Statesman, The Guardian, The Spectator, NME, Mojo, Time Out, New Scientist, Caught By The River, The Morning Star, Vice, The Quietus, Melody Maker and numerous others. In this folksy, magnetic tale, two outsiders seek healing and enlightenment by creating crop formations in a Wiltshire field ... A memorable hymn to beauty' OBSERVER
