About this deal

Both of our experts agree on the utility of a slow cooker. Mooney reminds us that slow cookers are perfect for anyone with a busy life who does not have time to stand over a pot. Bazahm points out they are usually inexpensive and very convenient. “You put everything together, set cooking time, and let it do the work while you go about your day. It is perfect for tougher cuts of meat and the cooking method allows flavors to meld together.” The glass lid and stoneware insert are dishwasher safe, but the size of the insert may be hard to load. The good news is even without a dishwasher, this model cleans up easily by hand and no drips or buildup were observed between the interior and exterior. My experience as both a professional chef and a passionate home cook come into play when I’m evaluating the performance and convenience of pots and pans, appliances, and tools.

There’s no timer delay, but there are a wide range of cooking programmes. As well as sauté/sear, there’s fast stew (1:30 or 1:45 hours) and three slow cooking levels (4-6 hours, 6-8 hours or 8-10 hours, with cooking times adjustable by 30 minute increments). These are controlled via two simple buttons and the remaining cooking time is shown on a digital display. We also appreciated the ease of operation. The control panel lights up, making it easy to read even in a dark kitchen. There are buttons for selecting slow cook, brown/sauté, steam, start/stop, and plus/minus increments for time and temperature. The slow cook function has three temperature settings: high, low, and simmer. Programming was very easy, and we loved the level of control we had throughout all the cooking trials. The cooking pot, utensil and glass lid are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning, or you can wash by hand. The easy-to-read digital display shows how much cooking time is left, as well as the temperature setting. We found it to be a very intuitive appliance. For storage, the cord stores on the bottom of the cooker. If you don’t need to use your slow cooker on a buffet, there is a similar model with a solid glass lid. For the large cut of meat trial, we recorded how long it took to become tender on low heat. During the additional food tests, we observed whether we had to interact with the slow cooker, the performance of the slow cooker at both low and high temperatures, and the outcome of the dishes prepared on each. Finally, we evaluated even cooking and noticeable hot spots or scorching. One of the best things about the Drew and Cole Cleverchef Pro is the app, which comes with a huge range of recipes at the touch of a button. Compared to a lot of multi-cookers the Drew and Cole Cleverchef Pro has an uncomplicated display that's simple to customise. A great choice for those who want a smart multi-cooker. One 300W electronic base with handles and pot size selection buttons and with all round heat distribution Basic slow cookers won’t get hot enough to sauté meat or vegetables, so you’ll need to do this in a pan before transferring the contents to the bowl. However, more expensive models offer a different one-pot solution. This can either be bowls that you use on your hob or in your oven in place of a pan (some will even be induction compatible). They will need to be moved to the slow cooker base. Machines with a sauté function for high-heat browning can simply be switched to slow cooking.

Bazahm cites heat settings as the most important feature to look at because, “...some models struggle to maintain temperatures that can result in overcooking or undercooking dishes,” she says. She also appreciates models that offer programmable timers that allow you to set a cooking time and switch to warming mode once cooking is done to prevent overcooking. The slow-cook function can be set to high, low, simmer, or warm for optimal cooking control up to 24 hours. Roasting can be set for 250 to 450 degrees for up to six hours, steaming can be set for up to 90 minutes, and sauté can be set for up to 500 degrees. Even though I like the intricacies of cooking, there are some days when I crave comfort food without the fuss of preparing it. That’s when I pull out my slow cooker. The Tests When we tested its slow cooking mode we found that it's almost too good at retaining moisture. Recipes that came out more saucy in some slow cookers were a little less rich because it's also designed to be an airtight pressure cooker. That can be remedied though by adding less liquid or taking into account the liquid that will come out of meat and veggies when you add them.

Performance Comparison

The Ninja Foodi Multi-Cooker is certainly mighty, but if you like your gadgets it could be a great investment. You can of course just use this multi-cooker as a slow cooker, for which it has a generous 6 litre capacity, but you can also take advantage of the sear setting to brown meat and veggies before slow cooking for a more rich flavour. There are three settings total: program (which allows you to set a cooking time), probe (which uses the temperature probe to determine doneness), and manual (which lets you set high, low, or warm temperatures without setting a cooking time). We were really impressed by the ease of use; as the name implies, you really can set it and forget it. Not a single dish had any hot spots: Everything came out evenly cooked and delicious. During testing, a slow-cooked pot roast emerged perfectly. The meat was moist and flavorful and could be carved into beautiful thin slices. And the vegetables were fork-tender, but still held their shape. The real winner on this slow cooker though, is the handles. The trapezoid shape makes them easy to grab and lift, while the silicone covering ensures you can carry it without wearing gloves, making it easy to transport without worrying about the hot temperature or the 13.7-pound weight.

Programmable time (30min increments) and temp (high/med/low/keep warm); auto warm setting for 4 hrs Slow cookers are also brilliant for less-than-confident cooks, easily creating all those meals that seem a bit scary on the hob. That’s because slow cooking develops the flavours of food for richer, tastier results. It’s not just dinners that slow cookers excel at making either. They make great porridge, granola, stewed apples, bread and butter pudding, fudge and dips. You can use your slow cooker to melt chocolate, as a Bain-marie. How much should I spend on a slow cooker? Today’s slow cookers offer a variety of useful features. From programmable timing to special lids that contain heat, you’ll find all sorts of extras that make cooking easier. Of course, if your needs are simple, those features might make your device more complicated (and expensive) than it needs to be. The 8L capacity is perfect for cooking up to 8 portions. Great for feeding a crowd or batch-cooking food to freeze. On the bottom are small buttons for programming the various heat settings and an LCD display. The slow cook mode includes low, high, and warm settings, as well as a simmer for keeping food hot. It also includes a “reheat” setting, which is fairly unique for a slow cooker. For home cooks who love the effects of slow cooking, but don’t want to stand over a pot or dirty every pan in the house, the Cuisinart Cook Central Multi-Cooker is a versatile choice that embraces the set-it-and-forget-it functionality. It steams, sautés/browns, and slow cooks all within the unit, so no extra dishes to wash. The insert can also double as a serving vessel, further cutting down on cleanup. Often in recipes for slow-cooked food, browning is recommended before slow cooking to enhance flavor, and this appliance completes all the necessary cooking work with just one pan.
