About this deal

Through the use of USB-C™ users get superfast data transfer over SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps. It also includes a total of four USBs: one USB 2.0 port and an HDMI 2.0 port and two SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps Type A ports – one of which can be used for offline charging. What we are most excited about is comparing this machine with its predecessor. The rumor says that 2022’s Aspire 5 has greatly improved cooling, so let’s not waste any more time, and get right into the action. The slim 17.95mm laptop has a professional appearance with its sandblasted aluminum cover and multiple color options1 to fit your own sense of style. USB Type-C port:USB 3.2 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps), DisplayPort over USB-C, Thunderbolt 4, USB charging 5 V; 3 A, DC-in port 20 V; 65 W

The same can be said about the graphics performance, which is fantastic. The 30W TGP was no problem at all, with the maximum temperature we monitored at the end being 65°C. Gaming comfort Acer Aspire 5 (A517-53G) is equipped with a Full HD IPS screen, model number BOE NV173FHM-N49 (BOE084E). Its diagonal is 17.3″ (43.94 cm), and the resolution – 1920 х 1080. Additionally, the screen ratio is 16:9, the pixel density – 127 ppi, and their pitch – 0.1995 x 0.1995 mm. The screen can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 69 cm (from this distance, the average human eye can’t see the individual pixels). The larger size of the Aspire 5 at least allows for more ports and a webcam up top, rather than the awkward nose-cam on Honor and Huawei’s devices. However, I’d much rather grab a dongle and get the MagicBook. If the webcam problem really gets your goat then I still prefer another device to Acer’s laptop; the Avita Liber offers design and performance closer to the Aspire 5 but still with a more modern look overall. Step up your game with an Aspire 5 equipped with an NVIDIA® GeForce RTX® dedicated GPU, which is the most advanced platform for ray tracing and AI technologies that are revolutionizing the ways we play and create. Our testing showed the Aspire 5 score well in the processor stakes against rivals. However, I’d look to the PC Mark 10 holistic score as a more accurate representation of the overall experience. The Aspire often experienced slow down even when venturing above six tabs in Chrome. Sound is of importance when communicating and listening. This laptop has been designed and certified to work with Cortana. For enhanced sound quality it also comes with Acer True Harmony. However, it does fall down when it comes to brightness. The Aspire 5 is among the worst laptops we’ve tested over the past year when it comes to max brightness. Don’t expect to use this outside without serious glare. Acer Aspire 5 (A517-53G)’s display doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. This makes it comfortable for long working periods, without being harmful to your eyes in this aspect. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t describe it as ugly, but it’s far from a laptop you’d ever showcase for its looks. A basic and, mostly, plastic design along with a chunky bezel, which Acer ambitiously describes as “narrow”, puts this laptop’s design far behind machines from Honor, Huawei and Asus.

For both performance and design, the Aspire 5 is surpassed by the Honor MagicBook 14 and Huawei MateBook D 14, which offer far sleeker looks, better typing experiences and quieter fans. The versatile Aspire 5 Series is made to maximize your productivity and functionality. Choose between the latest Intel® Core™ or AMD Ryzen ™ Processors, with NVIDIA® graphics for accelerated photo and video editing performance. Maximize your multitasking and productivity with the latest 13th Gen Intel® Core™ Processors1 for accelerated performance. And with onboard LPDDR5 memory and M.2 SSD storage—the Aspire 5 is made to do it all

The maximum measured brightness is 287 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen and 266 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 13%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 6830K (average) – slightly colder than the 6500K optimum for sRGB. Last year, the Aspire 5 (A517-52G) was one of the good 17-inch laptops on the market. However, this year, Acer raised the bar with the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4, two RAM SODIMM slots, and providing one more M.2 PCIe x4 slot for storage. The Aspire’s integrated Iris Xe graphics won’t win any awards either, with 3DMark scores that generally leave it in the ‘less than 20fps’ category. But, to be fair, 3DMark does use very high graphics settings, so if you don’t mind turning the graphics quality down a little you might even be able to get a bit of casual gaming done every now and then. One big change was also the loss of 400 grams from the overall weight of the product. This made the machine stop the scales at 2.20 kilos – a point, previously reserved for 15-inch devices.

With that said, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 (17″, 2022) is even lighter at 2.04 kg. What makes the Aspire 5 superior is the presence of a dedicated GPU. Our configuration is equipped with the MX550, which was no match for the brand-new cooling solution. Acer added one more heat pipe, and one more fan, which helps the device completely obliterate its predecessor when it comes to cooling capacity. The Acer Aspire certainly doesn’t redeem its design shortcomings when it comes to audio. The speakers are tinny and offer next to no bass, listening to music on this laptop was frankly unpleasant and, for videos, it wasn’t much better.

You work at BID, what a legend.

Nevertheless, the best thing we have seen is that you have a wide variety of choices, for pretty much every budget. And you can almost never go wrong. On the other hand, we might be seeing the last days of 17-inch computers. The market was flooded with 16-inch devices, while 18-inch monsters are just around the corner, as we have seen at CES 2023. The 14-inch screen only provides 1920x1080 resolution, but it’s bright and clear, with good viewing angles. We’re also pleased to see that it has a matte finish that helps to reduce glare and reflection. The 720p webcam is a bit basic, but the image quality was better than we’d expected - it gets a bit grainy if the light is low, but some decent daylight produces an image that’s sharp enough for video calls. Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light. Gloss level measurement

Much like the plethora of ports you get on this laptop, the size of the Aspire 5 also affords good battery life. Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.See more and do more with a 16:10 aspect ratio and narrow bezel—choose 14”, 15” or 17” 1080p IPS displays, or step it up with 1440p QHD—all equipped with Acer’s suite of visual technologies for dynamic color and viewing comfort. The display itself might be one of the few Aspire 5 features that keeps up with competitors. You won’t be blown away, but the 1080p panel offers a level of accuracy that’s acceptable for productivity work. On the bright side, we are left really happy with the keyboard and the touchpad. By the way, the latter features a fingerprint reader, which is fast, accurate, and doesn’t obstruct the work of the touchpad. The Aspire 5 is far from a powerhouse and, unfortunately, struggles to even be a reasonable performer for much lower demand productivity tasking. Our battery benchmark testing got just shy of ten hours, so you wouldn’t need to work about charging during a workday let along a journey to a coffee shop. Our real-world experience bore this out too, if a tad closer to shy of nine hours rather than the higher ten.
