The Orion cloak cover all the same features you would expect. Waterproofing, sunlight reflection, thermal stability, etc. But the other covers also have most of those features, so what’s the difference? I’d say yes. If you have already invested hundreds or even thousands of dollars into a telescope, spending a small fraction of that to keep it safe is worth the money. I personally own the Astromania cover as well as a Green Witch one that is also amazing but unfortunately can’t list here because the company no longer exists. While I don’t own the others, I have reviewed them or tested them.The inner liner radiant barrier provides radiant heat protection, effectively protecting your equipment from radiant heat build up. Additionally, as a second inner liner it provides additional protection from water penetration. It is true there’s nothing too special about telescope covers and an old sheet can still cover it from dust, but all the other features do make a difference long term, especially if you plan to keep it in a room with questionable conditions like a shed or the garage.
We also measure the Power with our systems which is essentially the error from the reference sphere to the test optic. The reference sphere we use on our system is a very high quality sphere so the closer to zero the Power, the less error between the 2 elements thus ensuring a higher quality optical surface. The most important thing when looking for a cover is making sure it is going to fit your telescope comfortably. The advantage of covers against bags is really that you can keep the telescope mounted. This takes out the assembly time, and if a kid is going to be using it, reduces the risk of them dropping or breaking something while setting up the tube. The only special case here is Dobsonians that due to their shape require a cover with a different design than the rest, but there are covers specially made to fit them. TeleGizmos 365 extended exposure covers - These use a multi-layer dual material design for extended-duration weatherproofing. They use the original TeleGizmos Solar Cover multi-layer material as an inner radiant barrier. This is coupled to an outer cover made of acrylic-coated high thread count woven polyester. Other measurements such as the PV and RMS are important too. With these measurements, the lower the number the better as it shows less curvature on the lens. The flatter an optical lens, the better it will perform. The PV rating (Peak To Valley) is a measurement from the highest point (Peak) to the lowest point (Valley). From this we get the RMS (Root, Mean, Square). This is a similar figure to the PV and measured exactly the same way. The RMS is basically an average height difference from the PV so again, the lower the better. As you can see form the example below, we measured an RMS of just 0.027 wave which is a very good value.The specifications should tell you the maximum length the cover fits and then you only need to match it to the length of the tube of your telescope. A good cover must be waterproof and impermeable. Even if you will keep the telescope indoors, there are always the occasional drops flying through the window or worse, unidentified moisture or leaks.
