You shouldn’t give these blankets to children under three-years-old and, if you have a respiratory or chronic medical condition, you should check with your GP before using one. Something we especially liked about the Baloo weighted comforter is its 100 per cent cotton exterior and interior and that it’s made with only natural and chemical-free materials. The cotton is super-soft next to the skin and breathable for ultimate comfort, which our tester found helped them sleep much better than without the blanket.

If grey is your thing, most of the weighted blanket market has you covered, but for those who love a bit of colour or prints, Karmara is the brand for you. It took me a couple of attempts and about 15 minutes to get the cover on properly, which might get tedious if you want to wash it on the reg. Our chunky knit weighted blanket is made by highly skilled knitters with the utmost care and attention to detail. We also loved the double-sided outer layer which has a 200-thread count – 100 per cent cotton on one side and a silky soft velvet-style fabric on the reverse.It is always a good idea, where possible, to try a few different weights around the 10 per cent guide, to see what feels good. It’s possible to use the blankets overnight if they feel good and the user is comfortable doing so, but short periods of time up to 20-30 minutes can also be helpful to slow down and encourage rest during busy or stressful times. The velvety cover included in the box feels wonderful next to skin, and we often found ourselves running our hands along the dimpled detail throughout. Owl + Lark’s blanket looks the part with a silk-style, sustainable 100 per cent bamboo silk cover and metallic poppers instead of a zip. Many people will understand the frustration of nights spent tossing and turning, when counting sheep does little to take you into the land of Nod. The outer jersey-style fabric is super soft and while the open weave is quite stretchy it doesn’t feel draughty. It offered plumpy comfort, and we love that both the cover and the weighted blanket inside are machine washable to keep the blanket at its best. The result is a breathable blanket that’s soft and smooth on skin, and it can be machine washed to keep it fresh and clean – something you’ll want to do regularly if you’re replacing your duvet with an Orbit.
A weighted blanket is like a regular blanket, except they have glass (or sometimes plastic) beads stitched inside to give them added weight when you pull it around you. If it feels good after that time, then you can increase the time to 20-25 minutes and again just observe how you feel after that time.
