About this deal

Narrator: She thought. But she didn't notice the flame burning larger and larger until, just as she was above the center of the insect forest, it burned her wings. Everybody Lives: Given the level of destruction, it's a little surprising that not a single insect is said to have died in the fire. The Atoner: Frances helps her friends re-build the kingdom, and teaches young insects about the dangers of matches. Narrator: Because Frances was still a very young firefly, her tail wouldn't glow like those of the grown-ups and this made her feel very sad. We invest in our young people by giving them an opportunity to develop personal and professional skills while making lifelong friends and having fun.

Firefighters from across Hampshire and Surrey were called to the scene of a house fire in Ewshot near Farnham. Does This Remind You of Anything?: Frances, a young female firefly, is upset that her wings won't glow like those of the grownups. Narrator: The pain was so bad, that Frances instantly dropped the match from her grasp and it fell to the ground. It landed on a pile of twigs that the ants gathered, and of course, they started to burn. Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Frances flying with a lit match causes a massive fire that burns down her kingdom. We have 4 Cadet Branches – Belfast, Bangor, Lisburn, and Newry. Our Cadets are mentored by our Firefighters, Support Staff and Civilian Leaders who give up their free time to provide invaluable expertise and experience. Frances the Firefly is a UK animated short by Fire Kills. Intended to teach children about the dangers of matches, it is about a firefly named Frances who is impatient to have her wings glow, and accidentally burns down her kingdom. The short was frequently shown in schools, and can be seen here . It was later adapted into a children's book.

Our Cadet Scheme provides a varied and interesting programme of activities for a diverse group of young people aged between 14 and 17. It raises awareness of Fire & Rescue Service activities; and nurtures teamwork, communication and confidence that will help them navigate life. Sugar Apocalypse: Frances's accidental fire results in this, burning down the kingdom and injuring many insects. As part of our ongoing prevention work we produced a book with The Children’s Burns Trust called Lizzie’s Accident. This book sensitively tells the true story of a little girl who was severely injured at play school and has been written to highlight the dangers of scalding. It is designed for teachers, parents and carers to share with children to make sure this never happens to a child in their care. Description: We see a book titled "Frances the Firefly." When the book opens, we see the insect kingdom. We then zoom into the kingdom. A spilled cup of tea or coffee over a young child can result in a series of painful operations spanning years. But hot drink scalds are one of the simplest accidents to prevent.Narrator: Indeed, she did. In time, Frances helped the rest of her friends to rebuild their kingdom. She was also given her own job to do. We are passionate about engaging with young people. We promote an environment where young people are empowered to lead, guided to contribute, and allowed to make mistakes.

All the creatures in the insect kingdom have a special gift from Mother Nature and the insects agreed long ago that they would work together and build a wonderful land where they could live happily. They decided that the ants built houses, the bees made honey and the spiders spun webs to decorate the land. We then see the fireflies which were given a special job to do. They would light up the sky with their tail torches so that everyone else will see what they're doing. We then see the titular character, who was very young and wasn't able to glow as bright as the older fireflies. She tried very hard by flapping her wings but she couldn't glow as bright. We then zoom into the crescent moon outside the window. The other insects advised Francis that one day she will join the older fireflies but she was impatient. Narrator: It was only a matter of minutes before the whole forest was burning. All the good work that the insects had done was ruined. The houses were destroyed, the honey factory in cinders, and even worse, many insects were very badly burned. Each day six young children are admitted to hospital following a burn or scald. Because a young child’s skin is so much thinner than an adult’s, burns and scalds can inflict serious injuries and can scar for life. Physical scars can also lead to emotional scars – for the child as they grow up and for their family too. Relief crews from Yateley, Bordon, Hightown, Fareham and Droxford attended the scene overnight after the incident had been scaled down, taking over from the firefighters who were first on the scene.Crews from Fleet, Rushmoor, Odiham, Hartley Wintney, Yateley, Basingstoke and colleagues from Surrey were first called at around half four yesterday afternoon. Narrator: In the kingdom of the insects, all creatures have a special gift from mother nature. Some have been given the gift of flight, some the gift of super strength, and others, the gift of beauty. So the insects, being a friendly and helpful bunch, agreed long ago, that they would all work together and build a wonderful land where they could all live happily. They decided that the ants would build the houses, the busy bees would make lots of honey, and the spiders would spin silky silvery webs to decorate the land and make it look beautiful. Now, the fireflies were given a very special job to do, as you know, the insects love the night time, but because it's very dark, they find it hard to see where they're going. So the fireflies, with their glowing tail torches, would act as tiny rays of sunlight and brighten the evening sky so everyone else would see what they were doing. At the time of our story, Frances the firefly was only young and not yet able to make her tail glow brightly like the older fireflies. She would practice all the time flapping her wings and trying very, very, hard, but her tail only shone dimly, and this made her feel very sad, and all the other insects told Frances that one day she'd be able to join in with the grown-ups, but Frances didn't want to wait.

Scare Factor: None, but it rises to Medium when the fire burns the kingdom, then drops to Low when the insects gather for an emergency meeting, as it reveals the fact that matches could destroy a large area or a home in a short amount of time, which can raise the scare factor. On the whole, though, the short is cute and charming, like most British children's programming of the 80s and 90s; besides which, there is no mention of anyone being killed, which can greatly lower the scare factor. The King only advised Frances to never play with matches instead of hoping Frances would realise how dangerous fire can be. Recruitment for the September 2023 intake for the Cadet Scheme is now closed for all Cadet Branches.

Variant: There was a 60 second remake released in the 2000s with some differences from the original long version, again narrated by Richard Briers. Among the differences included were:
