About this deal

I read and enjoyed “prisoners of geography” that brought valuable insights. I wasn’t expecting this book to be about space! It was very well timed though, since India successfully landed an unmanned craft on the South Pole of the moon this week. Finally, a Conversation on the Future of Physical Geography II is planned for the Chicago annual meeting to continue the thoughtful discussion from Tampa, and especially to hear more from early career scholars on how to enhance physical geography within the AAG. Please watch the AAG Geogram for information on location and time, and send along suggestions for discussion topics. Written with insight and great wit, this is an essential take on power, politics and the future of humanity from the UK's most popular writer on geopolitics.' The Daily Telegraph

a b c Burton, Katie (21 May 2021). "THE POWER OF GEOGRAPHY: Ten Maps That Reveal the Future of Our World by Tim Marshall book review". Geographical . Retrieved 23 December 2021. In his latest analysis of international relations, Marshall turns his attention to the skies and the geopolitics of outer space, or ‘astropolitics’. If you’re wondering how geography relates to space, you may be surprised (as I was) to learn that it has its own geographical features – from Earth’s own debris-cluttered low orbit and mineral-rich Moon to gravitational corridors and strategic locations.Spy satellites orbiting the moon. Space metals worth more than most countries’ GDP. People on Mars within the next ten years. This isn’t science fiction—it’s reality. The more countries could secure vital resources by trade, the less reason they’d have to seize land. Optimists like Thomas Friedman believed countries that were tightly woven into an economic network would forgo starting wars, for fear of losing access to the humming network. Friedman lightheartedly expressed this in 1996 as the Golden Arches Theory of Conflict Prevention: no two countries with McDonald’s will go to war with each other. And he wasn’t far off. Although there have been a handful of conflicts between McDonald’s-having countries, an individual’s chance of dying in a war between states has diminished remarkably since the cold war.

Space: the biggest geopolitical story of the coming century - new from the multi-million-copy international bestselling author of Prisoners of Geography and The Power of Geography A survey of the current state of astropolitics (focusing primarily on China, Russia, and the United States, with one chapter summarizing the rest of the world's space programs) This is the first book I have read in this series by Tim Marshall and what better way of doing things than by starting in the future. This is one of those books that is about a subject that you may have no opinion on at the start but by the end of the book you’ll be chomping at the bit looking for somebody to discuss what you’ve learnt and willing to join you as a pioneer to Mars. Spy satellites orbiting the Moon. Space metals worth billions. Humans on Mars within our lifetimes.
