The most popular piping tips people often get when first starting to pipe cupcakes is the 1M which is an open star tip and the 2D which is a closed star tip, but which one do you use for which swirl? In this weeks video I thought I would compare the two so you can see the differences and this will hopefully help you choose the right one the next time you are piping cupcakes. The 1M or the 2D No.190:Pipe drop flowers and cupcake swirls with ease. This tip has a bar in the centre of the tip to create a more realistic drop flower.Fits amediumcoupler. I often find that the piping tips you can buy in a supermarket do not work – they are too small! They are more designed for mini cupcakes, or maybe fairy cakes, as they are easy and cheap! What you want for the best results is a cake decorator-style piping tip, that is medium or large size! Closed Star Tips are perfect to create closed stars, flowers or swirls. They are perfect to create a pretty swirl pattern on the top of cupcakes. This piping tip guide will bring you through the 10 piping tips you can start with, their respective Wilton codes, and how and when you can use them ! Combine Violet and Pink icing colors to get purple color shown. Combine Pink and Orange icing colors to get pink color shown. Combine Orange and Pink icing colors to get orange color shown. Combine Kelly Green and Sky Blue icing colors to get teal color shown. When you’ve finished the sides you can leave the top as it is, or you can pipe roses on top as well. In the tutorial below I pipe 4 buttercream swirls with both the 1M (in the darker pink) and the 2D (in the lighter pink) . They have a similar style but are slightly different. Looking at a very classic swirl the 1M gives the appearance of an ice cream swirl, with straight edges working up to a point, whereas the 2D creates a more soft, ruffled effect. So it just depend on the type of cupcake you are looking to make and which one you prefer. You can use a single colour, or alternate bags with different colours of frosting inside, or blend a few colours together inside the piping bag. I go over this in a lot more detail in my online course on The Basics Of Cake. Create individual little petals and arrange them into flowers, or use it to add small ruffles around your cake!

Whenever I pipe with my round piping tip, I always make the joke that it looks like little ‘poops’ on whatever I have piped – especially a layer cake! Obviously, it’s not, but often just using a round tip can look so good, and so satisfying! One really popular style of cupcake is the rosette, made to look like a pretty rose on the top of your cake. Using the two different tips the 2D is definitely my favourite for this effect. As you pipe the rosette from the middle out, the sides of the swirl slightly bend over and look like there are hidden petals on the inside really giving that rose effect. Video Tutorial – Comparing the 1M to the 2D One of my most used piping tips ever is the 2D closed star piping tip… I just utterly adore the swirl it creates, and it is just so satisfying every time! I tend to use this piping tip on my cheesecakes when piping whipped cream, or on most of my cupcakes these days! Besides grass, you can use a grass-shaped piping tip to make wreaths and pine trees, perfect for the Christmas season! There are a ton of different types of piping tips out there, each with their own serial code, shape, and number. These piping tips when used, will give you a wide range of frosting designs. These tips are in a class of their own because each one does a something different. This catch-all category includes the grass tip, the triple star, the basketweave, the Bismark and the cake icing tip, just to name a few! For cupcake number 4 I introduced some different techniques including this pretty wave using the #124 petal tip. You can also see that by changing the nozzle you use for the rosette you get a completely different effect. The 1E had so many more teeth than the 2D and it gives the prettiest rosette, a little like a peony as the buttercream lies flat. Cupcake Design #4 This characteristic makes closed star tips great for piping rosettes , flowers, and making swirls. You can also create pretty, detailed ruffles using this tip! Investing in piping tips (and piping bags) is always best in my opinion – especially if you want really beautiful bakes!! I have linked these below for you. Generally, I do not use reusable piping bags due to cross-contamination, but you can buy biodegradable ones now which are really good. Hold the piping bag straight up and swirl continuously to get classic cupcake swirls. Hold it at an angle, and you can create shell-shaped decorations!

Let me know in the comments below which is you’re favourite. Is there one that you use on your cupcakes or is there one you would now like to try? The Sprinkles I love baking, that’s obvious… I run a baking blog!
