When your child is consistently able to recognise the rhyming words in the story you can then encourage him or her to come up with their own words. You can say “Can you think of another word that rhymes with Potts and spots?”. Lynley Dodd is an award-winning author/illustrator who lives in New Zealand. She is enormously popular for her rhyming stories of the unforgettable HAIRY MACLARY and his friends. She worked as a teacher before beginning to write her own books in 1974. The character Hairy Maclary made his first appearance in 1983 in the book titled Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. [1] He is the protagonist in twelve books in the series, and there are a further nine books about his friends. [1] On your second and third readings of the story you can point out the rhyming words as you come across them e.g. “Listen. “yowl” sounds like “howl”. They rhyme. The end of the words sound the same”.

Hairy Maclary books are designed to be read by an adult to a child. The plots are simple, keeping with the comprehension-level of the age group for which they are written. They generally involve Hairy and his friends in adventurous scenarios pitched against local cats. The animals in this series, unlike the creatures of Beatrix Potter's stories, are not given human thoughts and motives, their actions tell the stories, and reflect their animal natures.

This books helps children identify rhyme and create their own. It provides them with an opportunity to learn a poem, a chance to make sound effects for Scarface Claw and create a change in tempo when they all run home to bed! Encourage your child to find the words that rhyme in the story. You can explain to them that you are looking for words that sound the same at the end, but remind them that these words might not be spelt the same. Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? Variety is the spice of life, so I’ve decided to diversify and pursue six different lists simultaneously. This book falls into my BEDTIME STORIES list. It has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and been translated into Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Swedish, Russian, Slovene [8] [9] - and te reo Māori. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy [1] first published in 1983, is the first and most well-known of a series of books by New Zealand author Lynley Dodd featuring Hairy Maclary. [2] His adventures are usually in the company of his other dog friends. His arch-enemy is the tomcat Scarface Claw. Schnitzel von Krumm is the star of several of his own adventures as well as appearing in Hairy Maclary's. A red standard smooth-haired Dachshund, Schnitzel's legs are the shortest in the gang.Sound familiar? That’s because the Hairy Maclary series, written and illustrated by Lynley Dodd, is one of New Zealand’s (and the world’s) best-loved picture books. Who can’t love that cheeky wee dog, Hairy Maclary, and all his furry mates – from Bottomley Potts (covered in spots), to the villain of many books, Scarface Claw! Hairy Maclary, who lived at Donaldson's Dairy, is joined by his friends, Hercules Morse, a dog who was 'as big as a horse', Bottomley Potts, a Dalmatian who was, not surprisingly, 'covered in spots', Muffin McLay, a cute little dog who was 'like a bundle of hay', Blitzer Malone, a Greyhound 'all skinny and bony', Schnizel von Krumm, a Dachshund with 'a very low tum', went together for a walk past the shops and the park into town.
