About this deal

The Disappearing Dining Club- This supper club takes place on the first Saturday of every month. The format is a dinner, then dancing, usually at a secret venue. DJs play before and after dinner, and the fun goes on until the early hours. Like his other supper club books, Faiola's newest is a coffee table tome, filled with vintagephotos, advertisements, menus and images ofsupper club staples: ash trays, matchbooks and postcards. What do you know about Nicaraguan food? Well, at Girl and the Goose, you’re about to know a whole lot more, as chef Gabriela Grasser has a modern take on this exciting cuisine. The recent menus included organic seabass ceviche and and aguachile. The beauty is in the presentation, which will have you snapping before sampling. If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, she also hosts nights for two to three diners. The dinner takes place in Dubai Marina, and spots are confirmed on a first come, first served basis. There's something in the water in 2019. It's been a bumper year for books by and about young women, books that talk about contemporary life in smart, fresh, subversive ways while remaining relatable. These books embrace feminism without taking the tedious dystopia route. They explore 'coming of age' without telling the types of stories that have been written a million times. They're all very different, but I feel inclined to group them together: Bunny, The New Me, Everything You Ever Wanted, Fake Like Me, The Paper Wasp, The Furies, Necessary People, and now Supper Club, the first novel by Lara Williams. I will admit that Williams' debut collection of short stories, Treats, didn't grab me, but this is a different animal altogether – it worked for me on every level.

Kvartirnik - A vegetarian supper club in Dalston, run by Anton Petrov and Mahab Kazmi, as a celebration of quality and quantity, using only the best seasonal ingredients And the food is just a bit part of it. I know some will concentrate on the idea that this book discusses food as a way to rebel or that by gaining weight through eating they are rebelling, but that misses the point. The point is to reclaim the notion that everyone puts in your face, but rarely expects you to actually do : Be yourself. Adobros - A Filipino supper club in New Cross run by Mike and Mark, that caters for about 12 diners at regular monthly events. It was started out of a passion for Filipino food, and a desire to spread the word across London! Bootleg Banquet - A supper club in Shoreditch, run by Pestle & Mortar Catering, who are also available for private catering, and can host private parties for up to 28 people.

A sharply intelligent and intimate debut novel about a secret society of hungry young women who meet after dark and feast to reclaim their appetites--and their physical spaces--that posits the question: if you feed a starving woman, what will she grow into? And there were the one-of-a-kind club owners, like Paul "Frenchy" La Pointe of Frenchy's on the east side. "He was kind of a Runyonesque character," Faiola said. Salon Japon - A new Japanese supper club in a private home on the King's Road, with chef Naomi. It's around one big table, with lots of courses, and all dishes are for sharing. I’d find a nugget of something — it’s like uncovering the past in little bits," such as a low-resolution photo that reveals somethingbut not all, Faiola said.

In among all this humane and effortlessly convincing material, the actual supper clubs can start to feel over-strained. The ideas about weight gain never quite work, because the clubs don’t happen often enough to make a physical difference. The sense that these evenings might be fun disappears into a hollow playacting of liberation and debauchery. But this all eventually feels right: the clubs begin to fail Roberta just as much as the reader. They no longer fill the void in her life; by the end, you’re left wondering if anything can. This uncertainty just adds to the impact of this strange and impressive novel. It’s the best on this year’s shortlist. Stevie put on “Cut Your Hair” and turned the volume right up. Stevie, Emmeline and I sang the lyric “Darling, don’t you go and cut your hair” DO YOU THINK IT’S GONNA MAKE HIM CHANGE? extra- loud, and Andre looked confused, because of course he didn’t understand. Milwaukee supper clubs in their midcentury heyday drew premium acts (and paid top dollar) for entertainers. At the original Holiday Houseat Clybourn and Van Buren, the acts included Tony Bennett, Hildegarde, Phyllis Diller, Dean Martin and Gene Krupa, among many others, Faiola writes (and wonders if Hildegarde's relationship with her live-in business partner was more than business). Joginder's Supper Club - A family run Supper club in Tufnell Park, North London, now in its 8th year. Rani and Saira invite you to relax, socialize, eat, drink and be merry at their suppers held in their candlelit basement. Cooking up North Indian Punjabi food each menu consists of traditional family recipes and new creations. The Gramounce - A supper club to raise funds for research into alternative structures within the arts, under the banner of Miles Kilometros, taking place every month or so at different venues.I recommend this book to readers who enjoy contemporary fiction and books that center around food and female friendship.

Let's Go In For Dinner - A new (as of Sept 2012) supper club based in Seven Sisters. Rita holds regular dinners in her house for between 8 & 12 guests, often to a theme. I think the author did a really well job looking at someone who has to stop apologizing for taking up space and deal with past trauma. I never felt frustrated with the character because her decisions were not based on anything volatile, it was just what she was used to. In that way, this character defies convention. Before other supper clubs in Dubai hopped on the gravy train, Kuv’s Secret Supper Club was one of the first in the city. While we know who Kuv is – an architect-turned-chef – the location is always a secret and only revealed 24 hours before the event. Previous meals have been wide-ranging and included a kofte tabrizi, Eton mess and dishes that pay homage to his Rajput heritage. There’s just one catch: it’s by invite only. We warned you, supper clubs can be exclusive, darling. You may think that since this book is titled "Supper Club" it'd be all about said Supper Club, the women in it, how it was formed, seeing the meetings, all that, right? WRONG. Granted, you do see all that, but it's such a small part of the book and is, ultimately, given so little room to breathe, that it may as well be a footnote.

What I needed was sustenance. Fortification. The act of cooking imposed a kind of dignity on hunger, which had become terrifying.”

Roberta is the protagonist of the novel and she has spent much of her life trying not to take up space. Apologizing for everything. Compartmentalizing herself to fit in with the people around her, but never feeling like she’s enough. Enduring a series of men ranging from disappointing to downright abusive. She’s pushing 30 when she meets the confident and free-spirited Stevie and they come up with the idea for the club—based in part on Roberta’s love of cooking that she cultivated over the years to give herself a sense of purpose. The Moveable Feast - A supper club near Clapham Junction aiming to bring people together in a fun and friendly environment over good food. Menus range from pies to share, to five course tasting menus, to detox food.
