While the price tag on this cooperative dungeon-crawling campaign is certainly high, you can see the value as soon as you open the lid of the curiously cubic box. Inside there are sheets of stunning 3D cardboard scenery, which you need to construct yourself. And beneath that are trays of perhaps the most detailed plastic miniatures ever to grace a board game. If you like dice, you’ll love this, which not only features fistfuls of tumbling cubes but even has dice-shaped playing pieces. Your goal is to push your orthogonal avatar over the finish line of a race before your competitors. To do so you'll need to roll movement faces on your pool of dice. Other faces generate income which you can then use to buy dice for yet more rolling enjoyment, and hopefully movement, on following turns. The Skyscraper Caper sees you as a billionaire crime-fighter based in the city. (Hmm, that sounds familiar!) Skyscraper… comes with tougher minigame challenges. It rewards you for collecting Items and building ‘Super Items’. In Blinky’s Great Escape you play as a robot trying to flee the doldrums of his manufacturing plant. This is the hardest one of all. If you (as Blinky, a robot, remember) fail certain challenges, you start to malfunction. And this has a physical impact on you as players for future minigames… Unlike the first game, Legends of the Dark will contain 46 pieces of 3D terrain players can use to build the various locations they’ll be exploring. Keeping in line with many of Fantasy Flight Games’ recent releases, such as Mansions of Madness and Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth, Legends of the Dark will also feature a companion app that will integrate with the 3D terrain and instruct players on what to place as they explore the world. There will be six different heroes to choose from, each with their own unique skills and abilities for players to master and develop as they progress through each of the 16 available missions in the core box’s campaign. Another blog post I've written, with the same title as this section, is a good starting point when it comes to discerning the kind of games you might want to focus on. To summarise that article briefly, I looked at two main areas. The first was psychographics adapted from Magic: the Gathering's head designer, Mark Rosewater. These classify players as a Tammy/Timmy - someone who likes to have fun, dramatic experiences; Jenny/Jonny - someone who uses games as a creative outlet; and Spike - someone who plays games to figure out the best strategy and win. When that Danger symbol appears, you have to flip the Location Card over to its reverse. These are the harder sides of the cards, at ‘nighttime’. Everything’s harder in the dark! When you start on Location Card 0, it tells the active player to randomise the starting time of day by turning the Time Dial. This is excellent for replayability. Sure, you can play the adventure by taking the exact same paths each time. But by having a different time of day to start means you’ll see alternating ‘Danger’ cards appear at different plot points.The players turn over the next location card, read out the story and then choose which path to take next. If there is an event, the player reading the card must complete the dexterity challenge. Daybreak looks to utilise the tried-and-tested co-op game formula found in Pandemic - presenting the players with increasingly difficult threats for them to manage, whilst working towards a shared goal - and apply it to an incredibly important subject. Climate change is very much a real issue that real-life world leaders are trying, and often failing, or deal with - so Daybreak arrives at a crucial time.

As the game progresses, the consequences to the council’s given advice will start to take effect, whether for good or ill. Players will have to be prepared to face the music should they choose to favour themselves over the wellbeing of the people of Ankist. The concept of the Dilemma series is easily strong enough to support a plethora of entries, as there isn’t really anything else out there like it. Mother Tree doesn’t sound like any other board game we’ve heard of and is sure to offer a unique experience. Hargave is definitely a designer to watch, with Wingspan just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her board game brilliance. Rooms can also contain enemies that players will need to fight off using their character’s various abilities - which differ depending on their class type - all whilst coping with any potential status effects they might have. All in all, Darkest Dungeon seems to promise players all the doom and gloom they’ve possibly enjoyed in the video game, but within a co-op tabletop experience. The intense challenge of the original certainly looks to be making its way into the board game, so it’s perfect for players that enjoy overcoming seemingly impossible odds. Become the next leader of a witch’s coven through competition and cooperation The artstyle for Septima is beautifully distinct and matches its witchcraft theme perfectly. However, some games work really well if they've been designed for it. A game like Century: Spice Road, for example, is as good at two as as it is at four. The project was originally expected to ship in February 2021, but has encountered multiple technical and logistical delays. While many outlets have had hands-on time with early prototypes, no one really knows how the larger campaign will hold up. We hope to have a final review in the coming months. With a remake recently released on the PS5 and a HBO Max series having just aired, The Last of Us train continues to roll full steam ahead with the series’ first tabletop adaption arriving this year.
