About this deal

Further supporting characters from The Railway Series have never been introduced due to the transition to mostly original material after Series 4. That is, until Season 20 where the Arlesdale Railway is introduced, and three stories in the Small Railway Engines book are adapted! Henrietta first appeared in the first series episode Toby and the Stout Gentleman, which first aired in 1984. Her last appearance was in the twenty-fourth series episode Gordon and Rebecca, Coming Through!, which was released in 2021. This is actually a recurring issue, with railwaymen making many of the series' mistakes. Yet The Fat Controller seems to live in his own world where engines have free will, when it's been established many, many times that the engines can't drive themselves (with a few exceptions, such as in Thomas and the Magic Railroad and at many points in the HiT seasons prior to Andrew Brenner taking over). The second half of the episode, "Rusty and the Boulder" involved a boulder being dislodged from a mountain and chasing Rusty, Skarloey, and Rheneas. It finally stopped rolling when it crashed into a station, barely missing Percy. Idiot Ball: Expect stupidity, accidents, or unrealistic things to ensue whenever anybody is put in charge of a special. It's even more jarring when older, experienced engines are the ones making the mistakes, though this has been toned down since Season 17.

Thomas' YouTube World Tour - Navigation, Never, Never, Never Give Up, It's Great to be an Engine, Thomas' Anthem, The Island Song, The Whistle Song, Ode to Gordon, Rules and Regulations and That's What Friends are For More About Thomas the Tank Engine - Thomas, Percy and the Coal, The Runaway ( mentioned) and Drip Tank I Have No Funnel, and I Must Steam: Scrapping. Also Smudger, who was converted into a stationary steam pump. Adaptation Title Change: The series goes by Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends (later shortened to Thomas & Friends) as opposed to the title of the original novels that it’s based on, The Railway Series. Alternatively, there is the original big engine trio of Henry (thin), Gordon (big) and James (short).

This episode provides examples of:

Captain Obvious: The narration and learning segments in season 8-16 constantly state the obvious. Take this choice quote from a Calling All Engines learning segment: "And bananas are no good for building sheds!" That evening, Toby arrives at the Steamworks with Hannah to find that Henrietta is repaired. Henrietta sees Hannah and tells Toby that she and Hannah are sisters, and that she used to call her "Hasty Hannah." As Toby leaves with Henrietta, Hannah urges them to work faster, to which they can only laugh.

Parts of the red coaches were reused for Henrietta's model, namely the side window area as the door hinges are left on despite not going anywhere. Diesel | Daisy | BoCo | Mavis | Derek | 'Arry and Bert | Diesel 10 | Salty | Dennis | Den | Dart | Paxton | Norman | Sidney | Philip Famous locomotives City of Truro and Flying Scotsman in "Gordon and the Famous Visitor" and "Tender Engines" respectively. After switching to Arc Productions from the seventeenth season on, the colors are more dull but the animation is much smoother, complete with new camera angles, very clever scene transitions, and a wider range of facial expressions. Disneyfication: Some episodes based of The Railway Series books in the earlier seasons were less darker and harsher. Annie and Clarabel | Henrietta | Thomas' Special Coach | Alice and Mirabel | Isabel and Dulcie | Victoria | The Quarryman's Coach | Observation Saloon Coaches | Orange-Brown Corridor Coaches | Orange-Brown Non-Corridor Coaches | Red Express Coaches Gordon has any phrase involving the word "Indignant!", but his official catchphrase is "O, the indignity!". Also, "Express coming through!"

The Hedonist: New engine Charlie has shades of being this, described as 'the most fun engine' and seeking fun and games from the other engines in the form of racing, jokes, and shirking their responsibilities. Especially in the later seasons, with Thomas, James, Gordon and Duncan being the worst offenders. Every time they learn their lesson about being arrogant or rude, they forget it in the next episode. Series 9 - Same Colour ( does not speak), Emily Respects ( does not speak), Which Route Should Thomas Take? ( cameo), Getting Up Gordon's Hill ( does not speak), What Goes Where? ( cameo), Who Respects Whom? ( does not speak), Who's Under the Coal Dust? - James ( does not speak) and What Does Toby See? ( does not speak)

You're a really useful trope!

He was the only member of the Steam Team not to have a berth at Tidmouth Sheds from Calling All Engines! onwards because of his shed on his historic branch line. Adaptational Location Change: Zig-Zagged. Thomas & Friends and The Railway Series both take place on the fictional Island Of Sodor. However, while in the books Sodor is located off Britain near the Island of Man, the show does away with that, setting Sodor in some unspecified ocean (with Misty Island nearby). A.I. Is a Crapshoot: These trains have personality issues. Not to mention the ridiculous amounts of crashes that they seem to get into. (See Incompetence, Inc. below) Series 9 - Buffer Up and Share, Day and Night, Party Time, Pride and Every Day's a Special Day on Sodor Duke himself was abandoned in his shed, which was covered over by nature and buried for many years, until he was unearthed in "Sleeping Beauty". Slightly mollified by the narration implying he was asleep the whole time.

Go-to-Sleep Ending: The first three episodes that focus on Trevor the Traction Engine, "Saved From Scrap", "Thomas and Trevor/A New Friend For Thomas", and "Edward, Trevor, and the Really Useful Party" all end with Trevor falling asleep in his shed after a hard day's work. Due to budget constraints, Flying Scotsman's role from Enterprising Engines is reduced to a brief appearance by his tenders in Series 3's "Tender Engines". Kid-Appeal Character: One of the reasons Thomas became the star of the show is likely because of his childish personality. Percy counts as well. Series 18 - Old Reliable Edward ( cameo), Signals Crossed, Thomas the Quarry Engine, Spencer's VIP ( cameo), Marion and the Dinosaurs and Samson at Your Service ( mentioned) In addition to this, the episode was adapted from a Railway Series story that was written during the time that BR workmen were striking, and Awdry saw fit to mirror it in his stories.

Though all locomotives are alive, the depiction of the road vehicles vary widely. Some, like Bertie, are sentient, while others, like Sir Topham Hatt's car, are not. After being discovered by Thomas' driver, it was decided that she could be restored at Crovan's Gate Works and used on the tramway from Ffarquhar up to its quarry to help Toby, Henrietta and Elsie. She also helps Thomas, Annie and Clarabel on busy days. [2] Personality All There in the Manual: The books The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways, Sodor: Reading Between the Lines and The Thomas the Tank Engine Man explain between them pretty much everything about the early series.
