About this deal

This 9 year old Ledaig single malt whisky, bottled in 2019, is one of 411 bottles aged exclusively in a refill hogshead. Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. However, the ship in question – depicted on the box in Turneresque expressionist splendour, listing forward engulfed in waves as it fights through a ferocious storm – has nothing to do with Nelson or Napoleon or Russel Crowe for that matter. Provenance single cask single malts from Douglas Laing offer a taste of the hugely varied work of Scotland's whisky regions. Ledaig Sinclair Series is named after John Sinclair, who was an innovative kelp merchant, in 1797 he applied for a lease of land known as Ledaig. After Sinclair's first application was rejected, he persevered and a year later the distillery was established.

The whisky made to honour Sinclair has been finished in Rioja casks. There’s a story behind this too – legend has it a Spanish galleon sank outside the Tobermory harbour over four centuries ago. The ship was said to be laden with gold and jewels, and Ledaig decided on a Rioja cask to commemorate the Spanish sunken treasure off the Mull shoreline. It also has a vein between metal and rubber, more intense in length, slightly disturbing.

Part of the Sinclair Series, created in honour of founder John Sinclair and inaugurated in late 2020 with this very bottle, it’s currently still the only release under this line. Made with heavily peated barley before being matured in ex-bourbon casks, and finished in hand-selected Spanish Rioja casks, this single malt contains powerful flavours of smoke, spice, grape and sweet berries, with a lingering saltiness. Run by the team at Whisky Magazine, the Icons of Whisky awards aim to celebrate the best and brightest people and places in the sector – not just the distilleries and the teams that work in them, but also the individuals and businesses that work to support and promote them and their products. This bottle certainly has got personality and the Rioja steers it away from the standard 10yo into much sweeter seas. I imagine this could be a bottle that divides the crowd and I’m pleased to have grabbed this bottle on offer and would be happy to have it come aboard my ship again. For me the biggest pet peeve is it has the cheek to be part of a series with no other bottles on the horizon. This 19 Year Old Ledaig from the Isle of Mull’s Tobermory distillery is the nineteenth batch, a release of just 475 bottles were produced from this outrun. Distilled in September 1997, and matured in a single Sherry butt until it was bottled.

Ledaig Rioja Cask Finish - Ratings and reviews - Whiskybase

On the nose: Fruit tarts with a pleasant, worty sweetness. Maybe it’s because I knew that it was finished in Rioja casks, but there were definite cherry and plum aromas with a feinty-leathery underbelly you’d expect from a Gran Reserva. The smoke and spice – which are hard to get hold of – are subdued under the weight of the fruit. The full list of winners and highly commended people and places can be found below as well as at www.iconsofwhisky.com Palate: A very pleasing mouthfeel. Buttery smooth and rich. An immediate heavenly mix of sweet BBQ smoked meats, rich forest fruit deep seeetness and Christmas spices. A rather simple whisky, without a lot of frills, which for the chosen price range is more than acceptable, pity though for that unpleasant note on the nose that appears with every sip and ruins part of the pleasure of drinking. Not modern stuff like super yachts or cargo monsters… well, actually, that’s not strictly true. Many years ago, after graduating from university and having watched too much of Micheal Palin’s “Around the World in 80 Days,” I harboured a strong hankering for travelling the world as a container ship passenger. Instead, I ended up interrailing around Europe for three weeks, but that’s neither interesting nor relevant to matters nautical.Anita Ujszaszi, awards director, said: "The quantity and quality of Scotch whiskies entered into this year's World Whiskies Awards was outstanding. It proves that the industry has not just overcome the challenges of the past two years, it is thriving in spite of them, with producers demonstrating a remarkable level of innovation and excellence. We must extend a huge thank you to all the producers that entered the World Whiskies Awards this year, and to our panel of expert judges." Inspired by the Spanish galleon which sank off the harbour of Tobermory more than 400 years ago. Believed to have been laden with jewels, we have finished our smoky Ledaig signature expression in hand selected Rioja casks in honour of the Spanish treasure buried deep off our shoreline.

In the mouth it’s a lively bonfire on the beach, with touches of pepper and ginger on the browned shellfish, with slices of blood orange, tamarind, berry tart, liquorice and a few pine needles to give a soft balsamic streak. As mentioned above the colour of this liquid is a beautiful reddish gold with a hefty tint of pink mixing in there. A poorly mixed tequila sunrise in a Whisky bottle. Now from an in depth 2 minutes of Googling I still cannot confirm or deny the use of caramel colouring but you wouldn’t mess with this… right? After yet another year of challenges for the whisky industry, it was time to celebrate the inventiveness of its best people and places in the Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky awards and the innovation of its producers in the World Whiskies Awards.
