About this deal

In the British countryside, foxes have a smell all their own, unmistakable to the naturalist and countryperson. It's also one that many find repugnant when encountered in their garden. Fox urine in particular has a strong “skunky/musky” odour, the intensity of which varies with season and appears to be caused by two sulphur-containing compounds, Δ3-isopentenyl methyl sulfide and 2-phenylthyl methyl sulfide. The skin, dermis and epidermis are all thin, the stratum corneum well developed, sebaceous glands large and very active while apocrine (sweat) glands are only slightly developed. Arrectores pilorum muscles that control the hairs are powerful. Foxes have a smell all their own. Indeed, one of my favourite mammal-related quotes comes from William Teagle who, in his comprehensive review of the fox in the London suburbs in 1967, wrote: You may be frustrated if a fox keeps feigning in your garden. Fox urine (and fox poo) is a horrible odor and can contain a lot of harmful germs. This makes it an especially dangerous hazard for people with pets and children. The gland itself is composed of a few tubular apocrine sweat glands that are buried deep in the skin, the ducts of which pass through an abundance of massive multi-lobed sebaceous glands and open into the hair follicles. The gland has a unique steroid metabolism, and chemical analysis of the waxy secretion by Eric Albone and Peter Flood found it to contain several volatile terpenoids, breakdown products of carotenoids that chemists collectively refer to as apocarotenoids and that are often associated with fragrances. In particular, dihydroactinidiolide (DHA) and trans-4-keto-β-ionone were identified. These apocarotenoids are also found in plants; the ionone structure gives flowers of violets ( Viola spp.) their characteristic smell and presumably explains the scent described by early authors. The gland was also found to have hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity (a particularly strong β -3 β HSD reaction for the chemists among you), suggesting that it is related to sex hormone production and/or metabolism, and to be rich in glycogen. Shaving the brush reveals a discoloured area of skin on the top of the tail at the location of the supracaudal gland. There is is no opening visible to the naked eyes and the gland does not obviously protrude from the tail's profile. - Credit: Marc Baldwin

Having said that I've drag hunted often in semi urban areas and as far as I know nothing has ever been worried or killed except one lamb, and the short term let tenant farmer knew the hunt was coming through. He was compensated for the value of the lamb.

Foxes may also scrape the ground or flattened vegetation with their feet, particularly their hind legs, following dominant encounters and/or scent marking. This activity may serve a dual function: applying additional scent from the sebaceous glands in the feet, and leaving an area of disturbed ground that may serve to draw the attention of any passing foxes, hence amplifying the message. Let 'em have it - scent marking triggers Certain species of flowers are more squirrel-resistant than others, and some blooms are even efficient at keeping the danger of squirrels out of flower beds entirely. Daffodils have a toxin that renders them unfit for consumption. Snowdrops, allium, and hyacinth are all disliked by squirrels, so plant them as a deterrent. Install a motion-activated sprinkler I bottled some Fox-scented sawdust in a screw-top honey jar in 1962, and at the time of writing (February, 1967) the smell retains much of its original quality.” One of the scent glands near the base of the tail is called the violet gland, as described before, it has a musky floral scent. Don’t let the floral reference deceive you though, this is an unpleasant smell.

Try to use natural cleaning supplies. Sometimes the simplest things work best, use vinegar, baking soda, and other natural solutions. Foxes have an acute sense of smell, and scent plays a pivotal role in vulpine society. A variety of glands, producing different chemical compounds, that reflect the diversity of fox scent application. A gland on the top of the tail, near the root, known as the supracaudal or violet (named for its vaguely flowery aroma) gland, is sniffed by meeting foxes and presumably conveys individual-specific information. Glands around the chin and the angle of the jaw are employed when the fox rubs its head on the ground or mouths vegetation, while microbe-rich anal sacs either side of the anus secrete a pungent-smelling fluid onto droppings to help amplify their message. A look at the types of scent produced by Red foxes, including their urine, faeces, anal and violet glands.

Chemical communicators

Lawns that have chafer grubsfeeding on the roots may be ripped up by foxes and badgers searching for the grubs during autumn to spring Deposition of pheromones in the environment is only really an effective way of communicating with others if it's done in the right place. Placing the “advertisement” on a path that nobody uses or in a place where it can be easily overlooked is a waste of time and effort. As such, animals that use pheromones to convey specific messages deliberately place them in areas where other members of their own species are likely to find them. We call this scent marking. In other words, scent marking is the deposition of secretions/excretions, either on objects in the environment or on other members of the same species, that contain information about the depositor and can be detected and interpreted by conspecifics. Human urine from a male has a strong scent that is supposed to mask the smell of fox urine forcing them out the garden. You don’t have to inflict any pain or harm. A sudden motion or voice is enough to send them fleeing. And a motion-activated sprinkler is perfect for this. Foxes eat a lot of plants. The presence of plant-derived scents may signal good nutrition, and research suggests dietary carotenoids are particularly important for the general health of mammals.

it is not possible to assign unambiguously a particular sample to a particular fox on the basis of a simple visual profile comparison.” Beneath the skin on either side of the anus of a fox, between the inner and outer anal sphincters, sits a roughly spherical gland, approximately 10mm (0.4 in.) in diameter, that holds up to about 1 mL of pungent-smelling watery yellowish fluid; a “ bitter-smelling milky fluid”, as Lucy Jones called it in her book, Foxes Unearthed. These are the anal glands, or anal sacs. The glands empty into the inner cutaneous anal zone via a short duct. Based on Berlin University anatomist Ingrid Spannhof's examination of 14 (8 female, 6 male) foxes collected from German zoos and David Macdonald's excision of 29 (17g, 12m) wild foxes killed in Oxfordshire the walls of the anal sacs are richly supplied with apocrine (secretory) glands whose ducts empty into the lumen of the sac with epithelial cells noticeably fatter and with larger nuclei during the winter breeding season. The striated muscle interspersed amongst the tubules presumably serves to evacuate the sac's contents. When droppings are used as territorial markers, left in conspicuous objects such as this tree stump, they are sometimes squirted with a bitter-smelling milky fluid from the fox's anal sacs. - Credit: Marc Baldwin Why are foxes so smelly?” was a question sent into the BBC's Springwatch programme in 2011. It was a year in which presenter Liz Bonnin was following the fortunes of a fox family on a rubbish tip in Essex. Liz Bonnin attempted an answer, explaining that scent was a good way for these largely solitary carnivores to communicate with each remotely. This is true, but I think it also skips over a large part of what is actually a much more interesting answer.

Making sense of smell

This comprehensive article will show you how to remove and clean up fox excrement from your garden. It also includes effective deterrents that can be used to prevent foxes from entering your garden. Why Do Foxes Poo or Pee In Gardens Predator Eye Pros are easy to mount and require very little maintenance. They can be placed low on a fence or wall at the height of a fox’s head. This is a night-only deterrent, so it won’t work during the day. The Best Tools For Cleaning Fox Poo

We know that animals can't produce carotenoids and must get them through their diet. As such, Stuart McLean and his colleagues, writing in 2019, suggested that, as foxes eat a significant amount of fruits and seeds, they likely have a diet supplying common carotenoids. Mammals are well-known to have the biochemical machinery to cleave carotenoids into apocarotenoids, after which they can be modified to allow skin cells to take them up, and McLean and his team proposed: The jury is still out on whether scent marks carry individual-specific information - i.e., whether a “reader” can tell not only that another fox is around, but who that other fox is. As we've seen, early work suggested dog fox urine contained a component (quinaldine) that vixen pee didn't, but that was subsequently proven incorrect. Similarly, Albone and Perry struggled to separate individual foxes based on their anal sac secretions, although they had more success looking at the ratio of putrescine to cadaverine. Likewise, Georges Ware and Pauline Gosden at Bristol University failed to find any correlation between the microbial flora in the anal sacs of the 24 foxes they studied over the two years of their experiment - different foxes sometimes produced identical strains, while the same fox also frequently yielded different strains. While working on his Ph.D. at Bristol University, however, Janosch Arnold found that nutritional condition and stress level affected the volatile compounds present in the urine of his foxes. Skunk urine smells terrible and is used for scent marking by skunks, to show territory and strength. It is important to clean up any poop or urine that a fox has left on synthetic or hard surfaces. The Fresh Pet line of cleaning products disinfects and deodorizes all washable surfaces with pleasant scents such as lavender or cut grass. You can use it by spraying, brushing, wiping, or mopping.Animals that are active at night are more aware of the reflective eyes and movements of other predators. Predator Eye Pro units mimic the eyes of other animals, giving foxes a feeling that they’re being watched. Cats are also belonging to Mammalia. They can be domesticated or there are wild cats as well. Cats have a good smelling sense as well. Cats are also being found in different parts of the world. The big cats such as leopards, jaguars, tigers, and Lions are wild. They will never be bothered by fox urine. But the domestic, or small stray cats will easily be triggered by fox urine. For outdoor enclosures, try Simple Green, with a high volume spray nozzle. You may not ever be able to get rid of the smells totally, but you will be able to manage it. Fennec foxes and some other desert fox species, do not have as bad of an odor as larger foxes. This is due to smaller glands, and body weight. They do still have a musty smell, and their urine smells bad. Is fox urine dangerous? Individuals could be separated with greater confidence if the ratio of putrescine to cadaverine was used. No obvious association with reproductive status (or castration) was found in the anal sac composition, which ties in with findings from beagles that suggest anal gland secretion from bitches in oestrous are no more attractive to males than those from non-breeding animals.
