Most pot sizes are referred to by their volume capacity in litres, with the exception of pots that are smaller than 1 litre which is usually referred to by the diameter or cross section of the top of the pot (P9 is approximately a 9 x 9 cm pot). Thus a tree may start out in the ground, before being transferred to a 9L and then a 15L, and so on. Even if it’s only been in that enclosed pot for a few weeks, it’s too late and the damage to the root system may already be done. These corkscrew-rooted Eucalyptus trees should only ever be grown to a maximum height of 10 feet (3m) as they are apt to fall over when around 20 years old or at the very least develop a nasty lean.

Although these are the smallest pot size that we currently sell, they are still substantially larger than many online offerings. This means; a traditional round or square ‘garden center style’ pot, a grow-bag or sack, or a decorative patio pot (see below) etc.This popular pot size is used across all our categories, from grasses to potted bulbs to ferns, as it allows us to offer a diverse range of plants which will supply instant impact. Our 2L pots are ideal for the production of amenity plants grown for one year, most commonly used for our 2L herbaceous and shrub lines, this size is great as the plants are small enough to establish but large enough to make an impact when first planted. Phlox douglasii ‘White Admiral’ is a great example of a Litre Pot, a small but delightful addition to any garden. Pot grown plants are more expensive than cell grown, P9s, bare roots or root balls (for the equivalent height) but it's worth bearing in mind that even the smaller 2 litre pots are a minimum of 2 years old (sometimes 4 years old, depending on growth rate), and they have been re-potted up to 3 times, trimmed up to 5 times, fed regularly and watered daily - and all for less than a glossy magazine or a fancy coffee!

Because there are always new radial roots growing in the rootball, once you plant your new tree into the ground these roots will penetrate the surrounding soil more rapidly and the tree will establish itself much better than a similar sized tree grown in a traditional pot. The older the tree you purchase the greater the instant impact it will make and the less you will have to wait for fruit. At small sizes plant pots are flat-topped cones, while larger sizes are more structurally stable cylinders.At the time of planting out or potting on, remove the green screw(s) and uncurl the pot to release the rootball. You don’t want a larger pot of soil, but a healthy tree with a well established root system and lots of growth. The 12 litre Air-pot– this pot is on the smaller side, so would be suitable for potting on a 3 litre tree, but not anything bigger.
