About this deal

Which mushroom species do you want to grow? If possible, select a proven strain that’s hardy and fast-growing. Machines can mix the substrate, fill the bottles, inoculate the sterilized bottles, and, after harvesting, machines empty and clean the bottles. Once sterilization is complete, you’ll need to leave the substrate until it’s cool enough for inoculation. This can take up to 8 hours. Some people like to sterilize their vermiculite first in the oven. This is only necessary if you’re using an old bag of vermiculite that’s been open for a while.

For small home growers, the easiest way to do this is with a pressure cooker that can maintain a pressure of 15 PSI.

Mushroom Grow Jars

Cover the top of the closed jar with tin foil to prevent any water from getting in through the filter. Then, place the jars in your pressure cooker, ensuring they do not touch the sides. Wipe down all surfaces and tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol and work in a clean, closed environment to minimize airborne contaminants or, even better, in front of a laminar flow hood.

When stored correctly, mushroom liquid culture will last in the fridge for 6 to 12 months, but generally, growers recommend using it within a month or two as this is when it’s most viable. Liquid Culture Contamination Take a hand full of aspen and place it into the fruiting jars then sprinkle some grain spawn on top in a layered fashion. This helps to prevent extra moisture from entering through the filters and oversaturating the substrate. For example, you can replace the brown rice flour with flour from other grains like millet or rye and the vermiculite with other substrate materials like coco coir. Before you begin, you’ll need to ensure you have all the necessary supplies and equipment, including the following: A Syringe Containing Mushroom Spores or Culture

The Basics of Mushroom Jars

Fungal spores don’t contain much water, making them difficult to heat. And steaming alone will not create temperatures high enough to kill them. Although the price for this set of filled jars is much lower than that of the other brand, it’s worth noting it’s still higher than filling your own jars would be.

So for the stage where the mycelium first establishes itself, you need sterilized substrate in sterilized containers that you can keep closed. You also need multiple small containers rather than one big one because that way if one container gets contaminated you don’t lose the whole batch. It’s also helpful if the containers are see-through so that you can spot any contamination that does appear, and so you know when the substrate has been fully colonized. If the containers are reusable, that’s even better. Most growers use a clean workstation in front of a laminar flow hood, but you could also use a still air box or glove box.
