Although no map of the universe created by Sapkowski has been released, fans have created several maps. According to Sapkowski, the existing maps are "mostly accurate", and he uses a version created by Czech translator Stanislav Komárek. [33]The Witcher ( Polish: Wiedźmin, pronounced [ˈvjɛd͡ʑmin]) is a series of six fantasy novels and 15 short stories written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series revolves around the eponymous "witcher", Geralt of Rivia. In Sapkowski's works, "witchers" are beast hunters who are given supernatural abilities at a young age to battle wild beasts and monsters. The Witcher began with a titular 1986 short story that Sapkowski entered into a competition held by Fantastyka magazine, marking his debut as an author. Due to reader demand, Sapkowski wrote 14 more stories before starting a series of novels in 1994. Known as The Witcher Saga, he wrote one book a year until the fifth and final installment in 1999. A standalone prequel novel, Season of Storms, was published in 2013. Vladimir Vasilyev — The Witcher of Grand Kiev]. Миры Анджея Сапковского[ Worlds of Andrzej Sapkowski] (in Russian). Even though Geralt and Yennefer had thought it better to be separated, they decide to stay together after Ciri’s stunt. Yennefer must attend a special gathering of the Wizard’s Guild and bring Geralt along as her escort. The initial festivities contain much excitement and revelations for the pair. After a long night of various diversions, the real action begins. A coup is staged and in the fighting and confusion, Yennefer and Geralt are separated. Geralt is gravely injured and almost killed. Yennefer is gone. And Ciri vanishes from her safe room. No one knows where she is. Can Geralt find her before it’s too late? The Time of Contempt is a book of action Time of Contempt (official English translation, literal translation: The Time of Disdain, early title was announced as Times of Anger, original Polish: Czas pogardy), written by Andrzej Sapkowski, first published in Poland by SUPERNOWA in 1995, is the fourth book in the Witcher series and the second novel in the Witcher saga. It directly continues Blood of Elves, which began the saga of Ciri and Geralt. I was warned about the translation in this book but I honestly did not sense a big difference between this one and the previous books. There were certainly lines that could have been more polished but it did not take from my enjoyment of the story. Sapkowski chose wiedźmin as the male equivalent of the Polish word for witch ( wiedźma). [39] In his book 2005 book-interview Historia i fantastyka, Sapkowski noted that the word "witcher" is a natural male version of the English word "witch", and implied that the similarity between those two words, as well as between the German terms, was the inspiration coining wiedźmin as a new Polish word. [39] Polish video game designer Adrian Chmielarz claimed to have invented the translation of wiedźmin into English as witcher around 1996–1997. [40]

Schwartz, Ryan (November 13, 2019). "The Witcher Scores Early Season 2 Renewal at Netflix". TVLine. Archived from the original on November 19, 2019 . Retrieved December 20, 2019. The main character of The Witcher (alternative translation: The Hexer) is Geralt, a mutant assassin who has been trained since childhood to hunt down and destroy monsters. Geralt exists in an ambiguous moral universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent code of ethics. At the same time cynical and noble, Geralt has been compared to Raymond Chandler's signature character Philip Marlowe. The world in which these adventures take place is heavily influenced by Slavic mythology. Sapkowski, Andrzej (June 24, 2013). Time of Contempt: Witcher 2 – Now a major Netflix show. Orion. With Sapkowski's permission, the Polish publishing house Solaris published a collection of eight short stories entitled Opowieści ze świata Wiedźmina [ pl] ( Tales from the World of The Witcher). Written by Russian and Ukrainian fantasy writers (including Andrei Belyanin and Vladimir Vasilyev), they are set in the world of The Witcher and feature its characters; [18] With the positive reader reception to his short stories, Sapkowski decided to write a fantasy saga. [12] He claimed that Polish publishers at the time believed only Anglo-Saxon fantasy authors were worth publishing and that Polish writers of the genre were too risky. SuperNowa were the only publisher willing to take the risk, and "Now everybody envies" them. [14] For the saga, the author expanded on the story he used for "A Question of Price" and "Sword of Destiny". [14] Blood of Elves, the first novel in The Witcher Saga, was published in 1994. [12] The story focuses on Geralt of Rivia and Ciri, who are linked by destiny. Ciri, princess of a recently conquered country and a pawn of international politics, becomes a witcher-in-training. Geralt is drawn into a whirlwind of events in his attempts to protect her. Andrzej Sapkowski, born June 21, 1948 in Łódź, is a Polish fantasy and science fiction writer. Sapkowski studied economics, and before turning to writing, he had worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. His first short story, The Witcher ( Wiedźmin), was published in Fantastyka, Poland's leading fantasy literary magazine, in 1986 and was enormously successful both with readers and critics. Sapkowski has created a cycle of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising three collections of short stories and five novels. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s. a b c Andrzej Sapkowski; Stanisław Bereś (2005). Historia i fantastyka (in Polish). SuperNOWA. p.268. ISBN 978-83-7054-178-1.

Sapkowski has won five Zajdel Awards, including three for short stories "Mniejsze zło" (Lesser Evil) (1990), "Miecz przeznaczenia" (Sword of Destiny) (1992) and "W leju po bombie" (In a Bomb Crater) (1993), and two for the novels "Krew elfów" (Blood of Elves) (1994) and "Narrenturm" (2002). He also won the Spanish Ignotus Award, best anthology, for The Last Wish in 2003, and for "Muzykanci" (The Musicians), best foreign short story, same year. Joe Otterson (September 4, 2018). "Henry Cavill to Star in 'Witcher' Series at Netflix". Variety. Archived from the original on September 4, 2018 . Retrieved September 4, 2018. There is also little or no need for Geralt to be in these books. It's supposedly about a Witcher, but I don't recall there being much Witchering going on. Geralt fights with around two monsters and gets paid for none of them. Instead, he kills humans and gets told off for doing so. There are elements of trying to philosophise about the Witcher profession and killing monsters in general, but it is lost in the deluge of mediocre writing. Chosen by Fate: Zajdel Award Winner Anthology is a 2000 English anthology by SuperNowa, in cooperation with the Silesian Club of Fantasy Literature, that includes a translation by Agnieszka Fulińska of "The Witcher" short story entitled "The Hexer". 2010's A Polish Book of Monsters is an English anthology edited and translated by Michael Kandel that includes a translation of "The Witcher" entitled "Spellmaker". Maladie and Other Stories (not to be confused with the above Polish book of the same name) is a 2014 English e-book sampler with translations of "The Witcher", "The Edge of the World", and the first chapters of Blood of Elves and Baptism of Fire. After the reception, Yennefer and Geralt retire to their room and re-connect on a more intimate level. After a very fruitful reunion and a bit of sleep, the witcher is awakened by an urge to urinate, but in deference to his hosts, decides against relieving himself in the flower pots outside the window and decides to find the courtyard. This is when he stumbles upon the coup, already taking place.
