About this deal

Lorena Ochoa, Professional Golfer, Mexico – Athlete, mother, entrepreneur and unbreakable promoter of golf in Mexico Dr. Jane Goodall Barbie® doll comes equipped with a notebook and pair of binoculars and wears field attire featuring a khaki shirt, shorts and boots. The doll’s look takes inspiration from an iconic photograph of Wilma, right down to the woven basket that she holds. Wilma dedicated her life to advocacy and worked hard to make the world brighter for future generations, earning the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. Despite many advances for women, the persistence and reinvention of heroic iconography for women continues to value image over substance. And because of their iconic appeal, throughout history it has been common for heroines to be used for commercial purposes.

The Barbie® Inspiring Women™ Series pays tribute to pioneering journalist and tireless activist for racial and gender equality, Ida B. Wells. Mankiller—who has also recently been immortalized on a U.S. quarter—was born in 1945 in Oklahoma. A member of the Cherokee Nation, she moved as a child to California as part of a government program that was aimed at urbanizing Indigenous populations with devastating results for reservation land and communities. Her activism for women and the Indigenous community began during her early career as a social worker in California before Mankiller eventually returned home to the Cherokee Nation.

Antithesis of feminism?

Despite her years of experience, she struggled to find roles in the U.S. because of her race and eventually traveled to Europe to work in English, German and French films. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and died in 1961, at age 56. The Inspiring Women doll line began in 2018. The dolls honor historical female role model and were featured in the # MoreRoleModels campaign.

As Principal Chief, Wilma revitalized the Nation’s tribal government, and advocated relentlessly for improved education, healthcare, and housing services. Under her leadership, infant mortality declined and educational achievement rose in the Cherokee Nation. “Growth is a painful process,” Wilma explained. “The secret of our success is that we never, never give up.” upvotes Follow Unfollow 5 years ago Dots Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017
