Its shifting focus means Carl is not, strictly speaking, the film's protagonist, but his questioning of gender expectations in the first act echoes throughout the film, in ways he, for one, will least expect. The film's themes land via swings and roundabouts. Ultimately, men like Carl don't know how good they still have it, and women aren't necessarily more inclined to change things once they get into power. TRIANGLE OF SADNESS REVIEW – CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2022". One Room With A View. 29 May 2022. Archived from the original on 4 March 2023 . Retrieved 4 March 2023.Conventional etiquette suggests it's the man's responsibility to pay, but as a male model, Carl earns significantly less than Yaya, and, he reminds her, it's her shout. It sinks in for a moment that they each have very different ideas about what's expected of them at this juncture, and it's not long before the tension erupts into an all-out argument over the power imbalance in their relationship, and gender expectations more generally. The first third of the movie was boring, a real snoozer that almost lead me to turn it off (wish I had of).

Providing us with some of the more memorable genuinely hilarious moments of any film from the last 12 months, Triangle of Sadness is a unique feature film from one of the most individual voices in world cinema and while the film does run out of steam in its endgame, Östlund's film is still another fine addition to an increasingly impressive resume of releases.

It speaks to the state of current society when 2022 churned out not one, but three films that focus on the absurdity of the rich. While The Menu (2022) focused on the "foodie" culture that surrounds so many wealthy individuals, Glass Onion (2022) highlighted those "influencers" who try to disrupt industries. The one film I feel best captured the satire of the ultra-wealthy was definitely Triangle of Sadness (2022). The humor was the darkest of all three, but it went further than the other two in exposing the uselessness of the rich. Triangle of Sadness was announced by the director, Ruben Östlund, in June 2017, after his film The Square won the Palme d'Or at the 70th Cannes Film Festival the previous month. He said the film was to be called Triangle of Sadness, a "wild" satire set against the world of fashion and the uber-rich, with "appearance as capital" and "beauty as currency" as the underlying themes. [6] The English title refers to a term used by plastic surgeons for the worry wrinkle that forms between the eyebrows, which can be removed with botox. [7] [8]

And the ending wasn't good too. Again, as I stated in the title, too on the nose and too hellbent on pushing the same message down the throat of the audiences, who I'm pretty sure will have gotten it by end of act 2. We can tell -- through basic cinematic language, as my companion pointed out -- that he must be pursuing the characters we saw leave earlier (he's running from the left side of the screen to the right, just as we see the others do throughout their hike) but what has happened? Does he know what the others discovered? Did that one character do what she appeared to be doing to the other character once they reached their goal, and if so, is our hero running because he fears the worst or because he was in on the plot? Or can it be so simple that he has been alerted of the salvation that awaits?
