About this deal

Collecting issues written by crime novelist Max Allan Collins, Batman: Second Chances takes something of a back-to-basics approach with the character.

It has a lot of humor and heart, and makes Batman relatable which almost no other story in this volume does. Batman is equally rash: one story features him totally mucking up a case because a young blonde socialite who shared his penchant for helping others gets brutally murdered. Most of Grayson’s character arc on this matter happened in the pages of New Teen Titans and was never really touched upon in the pages of Batman. It’s hard to tell what Collin’s motive was when writing the character and what input the editor’s had. When Batman goes into action on his own and meets a young hoodlum named Jason Todd, he’s determined to guide Jason away from a life of crime. We will introduce you exclusively to Newpay finance products provided by NewDay Limited under this Introducer Appointed Representative arrangement. The choice to include two issues prior to the advent of the new Todd is entirely bizarre, especially given the lack of explanation for the Todd reboot. Then one night, while on patrol, Batman comes across young Jason Todd trying to jack the wheels off the Batmobile. The villains in these stories are kind of silly with an old lady that many believe to be running an orphanage but she really runs a crime school and a mime….

The last three stories are where the creative team of Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo take over and it’s clear why they were given the reigns. We get a single issue introducing the new villain, The Mime, who would never appear again aside from an Arkham Asylum mini-series published sixteen years later. Batman said that only the kidnappers' footprints would be in the OR because the doctors and nurses would wear paper socks over their shoes. There are a couple of stories that have interesting themes, and another issue has Two-Face and Batman facing off in a baseball stadium that's full of painful, yet somehow entertaining, baseball lingo. I liked seeing Dick interacting with Jason, hearing how Dick had to overcome his own inner demons and doubts after Robin was taken away from him, and watching him confront Bruce over the matter.
