About this deal

The video of Diego Maradona's warm-up routine ahead of Napoli's UEFA Cup semifinal second leg against Bayern Munich in 1989 -- which happened 31 years ago last Sunday -- is as fresh today as it was then. Recently, an overseas football boots enthusiast wrote an article here, which included the following

Rugby World Cup Shop for signed rugby world cup memorabilia 2019 including autographs by all the major players from the world’s top rugby teams. Shop for autographed rugby world cup shirts, balls & boots! In the 1982 tournament, Tardelli used the old “WORLD CUP” model with the changeable studs model with Adi Super Sole for all games, but if someone unfamiliar with the football boots of the time were to look at images from the 1982 World Cup tournament, it might indeed appear that many players were wearing adidas COPA MUNDIAL. When they returned to their base the players held hands and took a lap of honour around the training ground. Unity was built around superstitions and pre-match routines that grew following the team's opening win against South Korea. The most banal practices became custom, religiously adhered to for the whole of the tournament so as not to break the spell. Maradona is considered by many the best player in the history, and although we are not going to join that discussion, we do love this type of products, those that pay a tribute to players who have help this sport become the most popular one in the world.

Other football highlights from the auction include a World Cup winner’s medal handed to a member of the victorious Brazil squad in 1994. A signed pair of Diego Maradona’s boots from his time playing for Barcelona are also up for sale (Julien’s Auctions/PA) Had he not been booked early on in the game for fouling Maradona he would almost certainly have obstructed him outside the box rather than just brushing an arm across his stomach as he made his way ever closer to Shilton's goal. It was unusual to begin with for Napoli to warm up on the pitch. In those days, it took place before the teams came out," he says. "We didn't really pay attention until the music started. Within seconds, everybody was watching. Nobody wanted to miss a thing." Maradona's brilliance had once again decided the outcome of the match. This time it had taken 12 minutes. After the best individual display ever seen in a football World Cup game, Argentina were in the final where they would meet West Germany.

In a statement on social media, the Argentine Football Association expressed "its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend", adding: "You will always be in our hearts."

Former England striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, who was part of the England team beaten by Argentina at the 1986 World Cup, said Maradona was "by some distance, the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time". In terms of facilities provided for the teams, the Mexico World Cup was about as modest as it could be. Those available to the Argentine side were more akin to the primitive, underdeveloped infrastructure they had to deal with in their homeland rather than what might be expected of the biggest football competition on the planet. The next match was against Italy. The rebels ate hamburgers again, Aerolineas pilots brought meat for a barbecue, players took the same seats on the bus, Brown answered the phone to no-one, Tapia shaved (even though he didn't need to), Maradona recreated his invisible man, Olarticoechea turned reporter, the team drank mate at the same time, Bilardo phoned his wife at precisely 17:00, and Giusti went to the centre of the pitch where he dropped a sweet.

I believe the COPA MUNDIAL made its debut in the 1982 World Cup tournament, but I think very few players actually used it. By the ’80s, the boot was having an equally profound impact off the pitch, too. Lothar Matthäus, the talismanic German midfielder with 150 caps to his name and whose father had worked at the nearby Puma factory when Lothar was a child, was initially hesitant to sign to Bayern Munich (whose technical supplier was Adidas) from Borussia Mönchengladbach if it meant he was no longer permitted to wear his beloved PUMA brand. But amid all that, the boots he wore that summer have become iconic. They are inseparable from the man and that summer when he led his country to victory over West Germany in the final. The COPA MUNDIAL is now a really simple construction, but the pattern of curved double stitching across the toe was very rare at the time, and probably a very elaborate technique in its own way.
